I went for a walk on Sunday afternoon and noticed there was a pile of white paper bags in the driveway at the end of our street. I mentioned to Don that our neighbors were going to line their drive with luminaria. He'd never seen that done before -- thought it was something made up for the movies!
It turns out, at dusk, the couple lined the whole street with the bags and put tealights in each one. They lit the candles after the sun set.
There are eight houses on the street and in thepast year five of them have changed hands (!) since last Christmas, but the tradition was honored still.
What a sweet tradition for his son and your neighborhood. We have a farming community that lines their road (between two highways) with hundreds of white plastic milk jugs filled with candles. It is a very popular tradition on Christmas Eve. (We use milk jugs up here in Ohio because nine times out of ten it is snowing on Christmas Eve. This year temperatures are in the high 60's).
ReplyDeletewe did this yearly where we used to live in No.Va. I think it looks so nice and the dogs and kids loved it as well. :-)
ReplyDeleteThats such a beautiful sight. Candles always seem to soothe my soul
ReplyDeleteWonderful! And great story.
ReplyDeleteI used to do that along our long driveway for Halloween, with orange lunch bags with Jack-o-lantern faces drawn on them.
The only time I've seen these were at the Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds a wonderful tradition and lovely to see.
What a lovely tradition.
ReplyDeleteNice display. Wonder about the flux in your area. Happy New Year, Olga.
ReplyDeleteI love luminaria and have not seen it in ages. People just move to much!
