Shopping

I like shopping sometimes -- when I don't really need something specific because then it becomes a chore.

Recently I have noticed some signs that my ten year old laptop is showing its age.  Maybe computers age on a dog kind of scale? Anyway Don has been encouraging me to get a new one.

This is the kind of shopping a really, really hate -- too many choices to even narrow down to something specific. Don was having trouble understanding my reluctance, "It's not like you can't afford a new laptop." But that is not my issue. It's too overwhelming a task in my mind. RAMs and gigabytes and speeds and too many numbers. Makes my brain hurt from the non-caring.

Don LOVES doing this kind of research and then hunting down the best available bargain. But he says, "I don't want to tell you what to do."

Generally, that is a good impulse but in this instance, "Please, please, please, do your research thing and tell me what to buy. This is what I am willing to pay and this is what I need a computer to do."

He's on the case. I'll have a new laptop soon.  I wonder what it will be. And hope it won't be too majorly steep of a learning curve.

  1. He reminds me of David, always wanting to shop online for the best bargain and deal. Good luck, Olga.

  2. I do understand. We have a laptop that is probably going to be showing it's age soon. And recently we got a Dell catalog in the mail with all the new laptops available. I showed it to DH and said, "how in the world does one know which one to get?" When the time comes, I think we will simply ask our grandson.

  3. Gigi--Don is definitely a numbers guy like David.

Rian--It is a good thing to have someone to guide us through these decision. It can be so overwhelming.

  4. Oh yes, let him do it. If I had a volunteer for that chore, I'd go for it. Just sit back and give him the wheel.

  5. I like our MS surface (microsoft) if you are a Windows gal.
I am certain Don will get you what you need. Sometmes like you, I want to be told - IF I ask that. :-)

  6. We bought new computers about a year and a half ago, a desk top and a lap top. Starting with what you want it to do is a good idea.
I read on line ratings from neutral sources. Then simple things like how many ports does it have. Don't sacrifice best quality for best price.
But do have fun learning all the new stuff.

  7. My son is my go-to when it comes to shopping for a new laptop. He won't let the salespeople convince me I need things I really don't. My favorite feature of this current laptop is the touch screen. No need for an external mouse, and I rarely need the built in one. However, I did have an issue when it stopped working and had to use the technician - turns out there was an update that didn't get pushed through. He says it's been fixed, I kept the e-mails just in case it hasn't.

The hardest thing I had adapting to my new computer is the latest version of Windows (whatever it's called).

Good luck and have fun with it!

  8. Electronics don't even have dog years anymore, it's crazy how quickly they become outdated. I hope you will like your new laptop!

  9. I love shopping without a purpose. My sister and I love to wander through a store of new or antiques and pick out the things we would buy if we had the space, or the money on some occasions. I do like to research items I'm looking for but then I hate the follow through. I guess that is why Amazon and I are such good friends.

  10. Good for you, Olga! At our age, it's time we get what we need and WANT also. It's time to enjoy all our hard work.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
