Easter My Way

I am not big on Easter celebration so I wanted to help those who do celebrate. I volunteered to do breakfast and clean up for the Family Promise program. This is a program that provides temporary housing for families with children in area churches in addition to a center based program that helps the families find services, employment and eventually a home.  The churches involved house and feed the families for a week or two at a time on a rotating basis.

I have provided meals in the past. It's always such a heartbreaking experience to see young children homeless.  And yet there they are so excited to go out for an Easter egg hunt.

It's really hard to accept that there are these kinds of homes for sale in the general nearby area:

six bedrooms, 8 baths, $15,900,000.00

while affordable housing is so hard to find.

Then I heard about the bombings in Sri Lanka.

I spent the afternoon at the beach to ground myself. Beautiful, but even then I had to think about how an extended red tide outbreak in the Gulf and a green algae bloom in the Okeechobee water system that impacted the state last year.
Life is fragile.

Guess it's time for me to fix myself a Prozac cocktail. Or at least sit down and meditate for an hour.

  1. My cousin just left the gulf area (st pete) due to the red tide/algae. She and her 2 yr old had severe reactions and they just couldn't go outside. The baby couldn't breath and got welts on her body it was crazy. Their pediatrician joked they may have to move. But they thought about it seriously. So her husband put in for a transfer and they just moved to S.Carolina. All because of what we are doing to the earth. Enjoy your prozac cocktail. I am leaving in an hour to deal with family. I'll trade ya. :-)

  2. It is easy to become overwhelmed with the problems in our world. We can only manage within our own sphere of influence. That you are doing, as your volunteer work attests. Make your face smile. It helps.

  3. Some days this world we live in is not a pleasant place to be. Your ability and willingness to volunteer brings a smile to the face of those you serve. Take heart in those smiles.

  4. Good that you helped other people enjoy Easter. Heartbreaking to see homeless children.

  5. That is a great way to spend the day but, like you say, it hurts your heart to see children, much less adults, in this situation.

  6. You did it the right way by giving of your time and energy.
It is so easy to become overwhelmed by today's headlines and the decaying world around us. Heavy sign.

  7. Sounds like a meaningful way to spend Easter.

  8. Kudos to you for volunteering. I think meditation is preferable to prozac. Grounding yourself at the beach is an excellent remedy.

  9. The water (beach) has the ability to soothe... don't know why. Walking or sitting on the beach or just watching the surf come and go puts life into prospective.

  10. People are starting to talk about the impacts of Global Warming on Florida and other coastal real estate -- including the value of the real estate, and so maybe that $15.9 million mansion will provide affordable housing in the end.

  11. Those bombings were horrific. We fear the security of our country but we need to realize we must be doing something right because we are keeping the suicide bombers away...at least today. San Diego, California had a Mosque shooting just yesterday. Maybe we all should skip church.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

New Furniture

We went shopping for a new couch. I liked this one, the first store we went to. Of course it would be an impulse to buy the first one so we trekked around to other stores -- something we liked more, a better deal? No surprise that we ended up going back to that first store the next day and purchasing that couch for our living room. Also a matching love seat for the den where we watch TV. Because I had replaced my old love seat with two recliners. We couldn't keep three households worth of furniture after all. Well, my recliner was not big enough to accommodate both Levi and me. Poor boy had to watch TV from his bed on the floor. There! This is much better! Spoiled much? The little tail on the floor belongs to his toy squirrel, Buddy. It's like having a toddler with the need to be picking up toys or risk tripping over them. But his very favorite play thing is that bathmat that can be found anywhere but the bathroom floor.

Walking

I have always been a walker. Now that I have a high energy dog there is no excuse for not getting out there. And the weather is not an interfering factor here. Early morning and early evening are our preferred times so even when it gets hot we should be okay. We can get quite a long walk going around the neighborhood, greeting neighbors out working in their yards or walking their own dogs. But the landscape changes quickly just beyond the confines of the housing developments. It could be described as natural Florida or as sites of future housing developments. I do prefer the first option. And I really enjoy being out in natural areas so I often opt to head to a nature setting. I would have liked to put a picture here. Unfortunately my iPhone has made a unilateral decision. It will no longer be sending my photos to my computer. Why? I have no idea. However, we may be walking along happily enough -- me listening to the birds or trying to identify wildflowers and other plants while L...
