What? A new scandal not directly related to politics? Are we meant to find that refreshing?
I am thinking that the students and families that are suing will not get very far. I was qualified but my parents are poor so I didn't get the college of my choice -- well, maybe or maybe not. I have no legal expertise at all but it does seem the suits should come from the colleges -- Huge bribes were being paid to coaches and proctors and Rick Singer when we could have been getting huge donations to build Felicity Huffman Science Center.
In other news:
Bomb cyclone. The weather gods must be angry indeed. What else are we supposed to make of things like that?
President picks on newly announced candidate for having crazy hand motions. Pot-kettle??
And the treat:
heavy California rains have resulted in a "super bloom" of wild flowers that is attracting painted lady butterflies.

I happened to love your ending!
ReplyDeleteThe drought is over in California, good for the wild flowers, butterflies and people too.
ReplyDeleteCrazy news all over the world, but today's shooting in New Zealand make the rest of it look trivial.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand the super bloom is great news!
I can't believe the bribing scandal, either. Whoa.
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing as Maebeme, to add shooting to the top of the list now, but I'd rather focus on blooms and butterflies.
ReplyDeleteI'm still floored that being a good rower can get you into Yale! What high school has a rowing team for someone to get a top rower reputation?
ReplyDeleteEveryday there is news that makes us shake our heads and think "what is wrong with people??"
ReplyDeleteBut we've known for a long time that top colleges want different kids for different reasons ... and not always the best of reasons. They want kids who are smart, but also kids whose parents went there or whose parents are rich or famous, or kids who are good at particular sports, or kids who are from certain geographic areas or ethnic groups. I'm sure all these kids are good kids. But we just shouldn't think these schools are god's gift to man, and if we're hiring someone -- or encountering someone in any other way -- we need to realize that we're just as likely to get a top person from Penn State as Princeton, from Oregon State as Stanford. Too many of us are seduced by the "brand." But it's just a brand.
ReplyDeleteAh yes the bribery is not just by parents. We are learning how much bribery goes on in all sorts of businesses but it seems to be okay because there is not a whole lot of complaint. Drug companies like to give docs vacations for prescribing their meds. They call it a perk.
