Something New

I have owned my place in Florida (a 55 and over community) since 2011. I spend at least five months of the year here. Yet every time I attend some community function or go to the pool someone invariably asks me if I am new here.

It's true that I don't go to the pool all that often. It's true that I avoid community events like pot luck dinners, pancake breakfasts, and euchre (whatever that is) and bingo nights. I am not a hermit. I have a group of friends both in and out of the park and I am active with volunteer, social, physical activities, fun classes, and writing groups.

Fun classes -- it is important to me to keep learning new things. And it is important to me to get regular exercise. So this year I decided I would get myself to the community center for line dancing.
This is a challenge for me and my two left feet. It's fun, though, and really good exercise both for body and mind.

I just wonder how long it will be before someone doesn't ask me if I am new here.

  1. At least in a 55+ community you can assume they have a bad memory instead of assuming you aren't very memorable. LOL Happens to me a lot too.

My mom used to belong to a monthly card club that played Euchre in the '40s and '50s. I'm surprised people still play it.

  2. Even in the older group there is always the popular "in" crowd and everyone else. I am not a joiner and only do so if I meet someone I like personally.

  3. I agree with Jean...perhaps it's a memory thing for the other occupants. And I'm with you, line dancing is a challenge for those of us (myself included) with two left feet.

  5. Of course they may be the new ones and moved in while you were in Vt. I love to watch line dancing and think it would really be fun. Let us know how that goes.

  6. Like Tabor said, there is always an "in" crowd, and I am seldom in it.

  7. I’m not a ‘joiner’ either. But I agree that the people you share an activity/interest with are as important as the activity itself. I know people who line dance- not something I’ve ever been interested in - although it would be good exercise. I would like to learn tai chi one day...

  8. I tend to avoid crowds or organized events. I've lived in my town a long time, but I'm sure newer residents are more well-known. Line-dancing! You need to do apost about that.

  9. I loved to dance when I was younger. Line dancing would be just right for my old stubborn joints. I hope you love it

  10. I don't think I'd do well in those types of communities. But you have the right idea. You know you could be mean and tell them next time asked if you are new, no I'm not, don't you remember us meeting at the so-and-so?
    That will stop that!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
