Heat Lightning

I went to bed last night and watched flickers and flashes of light in the northern sky for the longest time.  I heard not one rumble of thunder--although I do have to admit that the windows were closed because the air conditioner was on.  It was hot and it was humid so I was thinking "heat lightning."
I understand that heat lightning is just a regular old electrical storm that is so far away that you just cannot hear the thunder.  Still, those flashes were persistent and lasted for quite a long time.  Someone was getting a hell of a storm.

It was hot again today, but the humidity was not so bad.  I did my library volunteer gig and then went for a short walk.  I even turned the oven on and baked a cheese cake that I topped with blueberries.  I used my adaptation of a recipe from Moosewood Cookbook by Molly Katzen.  My copy is a 15 year anniversary edition--printed in 1992.  It all of a sudden occurred to me that that makes it a pretty old book--almost an antique.  I still love it, though, and use it a lot.  For one thing, you can really fiddle around with the recipes and they still come out fine.  I used half the ricotta called for and filled in the rest with yogurt cheese, because that is what I had.  No problem. I like recipes that are mere suggestions rather than hard and fast rules.  I don't always succeed, but, hey, I have fun.

Speaking of food--I actually have some bean plants that survived the onslaught of the woodchuck!   I may have some green beans in a few weeks.  There are even a few intrepid leaves of lettuce in my garden, although the recent hot weather has not been friendly to them.  My tomatoes are starting to ripen.  We had grape tomatoes today and they were so incredibly sweet.  The Italian peppers are coming on strong.  All is not as bleak as I had thought a month ago.  I have even harvested a bunch of herbs before they bolted.  Now I think I won't give up on the garden after all.

Hey!  My old dashboard and post page are back!!!  I don't know why Blogger was choosing to toy with me like that, but all is forgiven now.  I could not go directly to my Blogger account from that interim dashboard and it made it so much harder to navigate around reader and Gmail.  I'm happier now.

  1. My son-in-law switched me over the Google chrome browser and now everything is working right again on my blogger. Hurrah. I don't understand any of it though.
Glad to hear you salvaged something from your garden. Our tomatoes are months for ripening. I fear.

  2. Blogger is having all kinds of glitches. Perhaps too much traffic, too heavy data? We got the thunder, lightning and lots of rain in short bursts...even a little bit of hail.

  3. So glad you garden is finally yielding treasures. If I didn't water vigorously, I would have nothing.
Glad your Blogger has straightened out. I still have to take extra steps commenting on some posts. Oh well, it is free.

  4. Yes, I remember the term 'heat lightening.' :-) It can be pretty, since lightening is pretty, but not so, if it's right over one's head.

Blogger continues to give troubles, at times... -sigh-

    I'm glad I moved "The Attic." :-)

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
