We had a saf trip and arrived in Florida last Thursday. It was a shock to see all the damage in my neighborhood. Some places completely destroyed and others (like mine) with only the most minimal of signs that a hurricane sat over this area for four long destructive hours. We haven't even been south of here where the major damage took place and I am not sure I even want to. It will be a long time before any kind of clean up will be completed.
Don and I have been busy settling in -- unpacking a carload of clothes and other things we brought down, travel laundry, grocery shopping (sticker shock at having to refurbish an entire pantry of the staples), and fixing the wear and tear items that always pop up. We found a leaky water intake for the tub when we turned the water back on and some electrical problems, like a fried circuit breaker. Don's electician and plumbing skills and experience come in quite handy.
I did some yard clean up. I actually felt a little guilty because there was a hanging dead branch on the hibiscus and another very small tree sheared off but the stump is already sending up new growth. I have an inling of what survivor guilt must feel like. I have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving!
I'm glad to hear your trip went well, and that things are reasonably untouched at your property. Definitely good to have Don there with his skills and abilities.
ReplyDeleteI'd probably avoid the worst hit area too. Enjoy your time there!
Glad you were spared for the most part. I think I'd prefer Buffalo snow to a hurricane to be honest. I hope you and Don have a fabulous holiday. Enjoy the warmth and the season!
ReplyDeleteYou can indeed count your blessings, now that you can see what you have been spared. I am very happy for your good fortune.
ReplyDeleteYes, glad you were spared. Such storms we've been having.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you were mostly spared. It is amazing how storms do that. Destroy one house and just twist a shutter on the neighbor. Good thing Don is so handy. I would imagine trying to find someone to make repairs would be difficult with ll the other damage.
ReplyDeleteGood to have Don around. Happy Thanksgiving from us in Hawaii!
ReplyDeleteEvery Hurricane survival is a miracle. Like you said, when it stops over you for a day or several hours, unbelievable damage can be done.
