We left Venice on Saturday morning and drove to Charlotte, NC. The weather predictions were not great, but we only ran into a couple of light showers. We did get slowed down by three bad accidents that backed up the traffic flow, but we still made quite good time even with stops for gas and bathrooms and a picnic lunch. I was not driving. I did not look at the speedometer. We'd made a hotel reservation. The hotel was less than appealing. I checked for bed bugs! We did have a nice dinner at a local family restaurant though. No free breakfast these days.
On Mother's Day, we drove all the way to Newburgh, NY -- an overly ambitious number of miles but at the same time making "good time" (Speeding?) We took route 81 through the mountains of western Virginia -- the scenic route. We stayed at a Red Roof Inn. I did not want to make a reservation online. I wanted to see the hotel first. I have always had very good experiences in a Red Roof Inn. It was surrounded by chain restaurants (meh), and we had dinner in a Chili's. We were surprised at the cold!
I had a package from the VT Country Store from my daughter that arrived on Friday before we left and a call from my son as we were on the road.
We were home by noon on Monday. It's possible to make the trip in two days but I just think of it as a three-day trip. The trip was like driving through spring in reverse. I was happy to see daffodils and some tulips when we got into Vermont. My lilacs are budding, but they are not open yet.
Sounds like you made good time anyway. It must feel good to be back. Break out a sweater and enjoy the cool. We are heading for the high nineties this week. Whee.
ReplyDeleteGood trip ... I drove 81 once, and I agree it's a pretty drive. And pretty soon you'll be appreciating those cooler nights!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a nice adventure. I didn't know Red Roof Inns were still around. Linda in Kansas
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great trip! One of the benefits of living on the mainland.
ReplyDeleteNice trip!
ReplyDeleteHow fortunate that you get to experience the beauty of early spring in Vermont now! I don't want the cold back, but I do regret that daffodils go so quickly.
ReplyDeleteI loved the comment spring in reverse.I pictured that!
ReplyDeleteInteresting to me that you went so far west, I'd have assumed up I-95. But then again, I know nothing! Welcome Home.
I miss road trips!
ReplyDeleteMargaret, the scenic route!
