Spice Rack Wars

The things you forget when you live alone! And then someone moves in and life seems lovely, but then you start to remember. Little things pop up. Things you didn't have to deal with for a while.

Okay, apparently I have a type and that type happens to be obsessive compulsive disorder.

Don rearranged my spices!!!

This of course started a huge discussion. Should spices be stored in alphabetical order (as God clearly intended) or should they be stored with like containers side by side?

Relationships are all about compromise, aren't they? So I am going to put the like containers into alphabetical order.

  1. LOL! Having never lived with another adult (or at least until my children reached that stage of life) I've never been faced with that challenge. You wouldn't want to see my spice cabinet...no rhyme nor reason except the ones I use the most are at the forefront.

  2. I guess I'm definitely not obsessive compulsive as I like eclectic and even though I like things fairly orderly, couldn't care less if they don't match as long as they're easily accessible. Compromise! I read somewhere that some people actually alphabetize their canned foods (I can't imagine).

  3. How cool is that? Compromise is the key to all long lasting relationships.

  4. Careful with like containers. That is how I once ended up with garlic in my coffee instead of cinnamon:)

  5. You got a laugh out of me with that one!

  6. Oh man, I can never switch roommates! The kitchen is my way or the highway, LOL. Good thing you have the compromise gene!

  7. It's the little things that complicate life.

  8. I've put my spices in alpha order for a jillion years. Those spinning lazy susan plastic trays are great for them, and I can set one in a back corner cabinet and still spin the tray for the spice to come up front. Yep, I even hang my tools on the garage wall in alpha order. Linda in Kansas

  9. Oh I understand this. Sadly I'm Don, without alphabetical order. But I have my own quirks. No cinnamon with paprika, baking spices together and cooking spices together. 🙃

  10. Rian, Alas, Don and I are both compulsive but about different things.

Patti, And see that wouldn't happen because cinnamon and garlic are not that close in the alphabet!

Drum Major, It's the sensible way to do it!

Margaret, I am the alphabet one while Don goes for the neatness of all the same brands being together. But yes, savory in one location, sweet in another.

  11. My spices are all just sort of gathered together with the ones I use most, nearest to the edge of the counter. Somehow the cumin always ends up near the edge of the counter by the sink, where it likes to pop open, and fall off into my white porcelain sink. But yesterday I scrubbed my old porcelain sink good and white. The problem is a thick patch of paint I had painted onto the porcelain where it had gotten chipped by the last glass jar of peanut butter they ever made years and years ago, to disguise the iron under the porcelain that the pbutter jar chipped, had become a hole in the sink instead of a chip. I need to patch it some way again for a while. It just goes to show it's always something, isn't it.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
