Do You Have Hobbies?

We have been having some hot and humid weather.

I do have a window AC unit, but somehow the idea of dragging it out of storage in August seems wrong. I will suffer through although I do confess that my energy has been badly sapped. The only thing I crossed off my to-do list yesterday was to go out for soft-serve ice cream -- a creemee to us here in Vermont.

Fortunately, I can set up a fan by my desk and shop on line. I haven't done any crafting all summer but that didn't stop me from putting in a big order for card making supplies.

There is way too much truth in this to be funny:

And yet:

True Story: I took my grandson to a card making group get together a couple of summers ago. At the time there were seven or eight of us who routinely got together to make a few cards, have lunch, laugh, and generally solve the problems of the world in our own minds. My grandson was a fly on the wall as he made a card or two and spent some time on his computer. As we were driving home he said, "Well, I feel like I just spent my afternoon with the Golden Girls. You should name your group. How about the Glitter Girls?" OMG. If you could have seen this group you would be amazed at how accurate an assessment that was!

Another side note: Sadly, two of the women died in the past year. If we get together again it will be without our Sophia and our Rose.

So for the rest of my day:

  1. I would have to drag out the A/C. Can't take this heat. It is 99 right now.
Funny about the Golden Girls aka the Glitter Girls. You have a quick grandson.

  2. OMG that last meme is how I feel - exactly.
My first summer in Vermont my boyfriend's family asked if I wanted a custard. To me, that was similar to pudding and I said no thank you. My boyfriend asked, "since when do you turn down ice cream?" I said no one asked about ice cream they asked if I wanted custard. So I learned from then on that meant ice cream in VT and YES, please.
That was not a word used in my little hometown so I didn't know and looked foolish. Ah, but I was only 17 so I got over it.

  3. I can't imagine how you are getting by without air conditioning. Though I didn't have a/c until my kids left home, about the year 2000, I'd be hard pressed to do so these days.

Glitter Girls sounds like fun, and your grandson is quite the character. I've been waiting for my stitching group to start meeting again. Hopefully sometime this fall. We did lose a member over the past 18 months, one of group lost her son in an accidental fall and she and her family have left the city.

The meme about a $7 item costing $92 in craft supplies sounds familiar to me. I was looking at a fall wreath I made last year with supplies from Michael's. It cost me $42, but if I had waited until the end of season I could have purchased something similar for $20 or so at the same store.

  4. I have a quilt square that I cut out months ago. but it is still sitting here by my sewing machine.
Sewing is not a summer time hobby here. But it's too hot to be outside, so I will play with organizing my photos that are accumulating on my computer and need to be edited and filed.
It's sad when we lose old time friends. It's becoming more common as we age.

  5. I love it! Yes, there is much truth in the hobby of buying craft supplies and the hobby of actually using them! Ha Ha. I am very guilty of the buying part. You should see how many skeins of yarn sit on my shelves for future projects! Also, I've been busy this summer so I also have not finished any craft projects! I am looking forward to Sept. to get back into card making and knitting! When the granddaughter is back in school. :-)

  6. Yep, so grateful for the a/c in the window of the master bedroom. Hot afternoons i can deal with, but trying to sleep when it's near 80 and muggy ... no thanks.

  7. We in Seattle have never had a/c. At least not in our house. I am ready to buy now, but my husband is still convinced we are just having a fluke summer. In our basement apartment we are not too bad off, but our tenants upstairs are suffering.

  8. I heard someone complaining about the temperature today and then said, That's Texas for you. I said well at least we go from air conditioner to air conditioner. Those folks above us are sweating it out. We laughed at the thought and shook our heads. I'm glad you have that AC even if you have decided you can survive without using it a little longer.

  9. I do have fans and it really has to be very hot and humid for the weather to feel oppressive to me. I was putting on my sweater in the grocery store and other shoppers gave me strange looks. A sweater and my cloth shopping bags are always in my car. Maybe my personal thermometer is broken or for some reason I really do have Florida blood.

  10. Haha. That grandson of yours is quite clever. He must be a lot taller and bigger by now. I have not seen a recent photo of him. What a cute kid! Oh I would bring out the a/c if I were you. It is so worth it. I speak from experience. LOL.

  11. Your grandson is so wonderful! I love that he spent this time with you. It must be so much fun to let your creativity run free. It's awfully hot and muggy over here in Hawaii too. I'm feeling very sleepy.

  12. I've noticed that, too, how easy it is to gather together all that's needed for any kind of task compared to the actually getting around to doing it.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Walking

I have always been a walker. Now that I have a high energy dog there is no excuse for not getting out there. And the weather is not an interfering factor here. Early morning and early evening are our preferred times so even when it gets hot we should be okay. We can get quite a long walk going around the neighborhood, greeting neighbors out working in their yards or walking their own dogs. But the landscape changes quickly just beyond the confines of the housing developments. It could be described as natural Florida or as sites of future housing developments. I do prefer the first option. And I really enjoy being out in natural areas so I often opt to head to a nature setting. I would have liked to put a picture here. Unfortunately my iPhone has made a unilateral decision. It will no longer be sending my photos to my computer. Why? I have no idea. However, we may be walking along happily enough -- me listening to the birds or trying to identify wildflowers and other plants while L...

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!
