Sewing

I went to JoAnn's a while ago to buy some material. There was a woman who was ahead of me in line with a shopping cart filled with bolts and bolts of material. She kindly let me go ahead of her. She was going to buy a yard of each of those bolts to make scrub caps. Apparently she not only donates these to a local hospital, she takes custom orders -- color preference, favorite animal, child friendly, etc.  Some people are so sweet and giving.

I made myself a cotton dress with my purchase. It light and loose and comfy.

But the idea of the scrub caps stayed on my mind. Not that I am gong to go into production, but my hair has gotten so long now I thought I really needed something to keep it out of the way while I cook or clean.  I found this tutorial on YouTube.
Quick, Easy. Fits really well. And it's reversible so two for one!

I definitely will make some for medical field friends and relatives in the future.

I later made a trip to the lovely little local quilt shop here in Venice to get material for a quilt. My step-granddaughter is getting married in October. I had in mind peachy colors and yet, I left the store with grays.

This is as far as I have gotten with that:
Ready to sandwich and quilt, but I will probably wait until I am back in Vermont because I have a big table there that will make assembly much easier.

I did finish a table runner with scraps. This will be part of a shower gift for my granddaughter.

My grandmother always said, "Idle hands are the Devil's workshop." Some things just stick with you through life.

  1. Scrub caps are a great idea.
For non-medical use, there could be a cottage industry using them to hide shaggy hair due to Covid keeping folks away from the beauticians.
    That dress does look comfy.

  2. Ah you're talented too. I think I am the only blogger out here in blogsphere without a talent to show. Love the dress! It looks like it's striped in the back. The top of the back or all of the back. Nosey minds need to know. :-)
You mentioned you wanted peach but got gray. Peach and gray look nice together if that helps.
I love the idea of the scrub caps. There are good people in the world. That was really a nice thing she was doing.

  3. The back top is striped because I screwed up cutting the back piece and had to make do with what I had. I tell myself it adds a bit of interest to a plain dress.

  4. Sewing is an interesting way to occupy your time and keep you out of trouble. Your projects are attractive sounding. My machine needs to be refreshed a bit but all the once prevalent businesses that used to do that have long since gone out of business even before the pandemic. I’ll have to check around.

  5. My mother was always working on something and I find myself doing the same. It feels odd to just sit and not knit or crochet. My sewing skills, on the other hand, are limited.

Great idea for the surgical caps, and your dress is lovely.

  7. Olga, you are a talented seamstress! That dress is wonderful and looks stylish and comfortable. I have a retired nurse buddy who made a bunch of those scrub caps for her physical therapist daughter to share with the hospital. I've made about 400 masks this past year and really don't want to make more... however.... maybe.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
