Eye Problems

I thought I was having an ocular migraine on Tuesday but when it didn't go away in a short time, I became more concerned.

Last year I had an allergic reaction to prescription eye drops. I found an eye doctor here in Florida who took care of me. I called him Wednesday morning and he saw me right away that morning, diagnosed a detached retina and sent me on to an appointment with a retinal specialist. Not how I would prefer to spend my day, but not being able to see is no fun either!

The retinal surgeon was absolutely lovely. She was so kind and so thorough in explaining options and what each would entail. I have surgery scheduled for this coming Monday. That's the easy part. It will be followed by a week face down for 22 hours a day for a whole week. That's the hard part.

Well, as a friend pointed out, I have time to stock up on chocolate. I will look into audible books. That not for sissies thing -- all too true!

In the meantime, I will enjoy the flashes of light and washes of color. Who needs psychedelics?

  1. I am so sorry about the detached retina and am just glad you are getting it taken care of. Bummer about lying face down for 22 hours for a week. Good grief, how will you eat or go to the bathroom. I had a vitreous detachment once that gives you similar psychedelics but is not nearly as serious. Felt like I had a lightning storm in my head. Fortunately, mine healed without surgery.

  2. So great to take old age with humor and irreverence.

  3. Oh, Olga, I am so sorry that this is happening to you. lying face down for a week would do me in. Audible books do sound like a good way to go.
    Wishing you the best.

  4. Olga, I'm so sorry to hear about your detached retina. A dear friend of mine had that same problem last year.... and had to endure the days facing forward lying down. It is a pain, but apparently do-able... especially where your eyesight is concerned. She is fine now. And I can see why you thought it was an ocular migraine too. These I get... and yes, they do go away after about 10-15 mins. So, if it didn't go away, I would have been concerned too. Glad you found an eye doctor quickly.

  7. Sorry you will be going through this. I have a macular hole that I need surgical repair on. I am really worried about not being able to do the face down positioning for seven days. I have some other medical problems that I have to get taken care of before the macular hole (a cyst on my vocal chord). I have arthritis in my neck and problems with swelling in my legs. Seven days face down I fear are really going to be hard on my body.

May your time face down pass easily for you and everything with the surgery go well. Take care.

  8. That's terrible, but at least they're addressing it right away before further damage is done. Stock up on lots of entertainment options for those 22 hours per day ... and I hope you can sleep on your stomach!

  9. Not much fun, what you have coming up, but it's good you have a diagnosis and a treatment plan. I think audiobooks will be a great help.

  12. Glad you liked your doctor and will have help soon. I check out downloadable free audio books from my public library. I miss reading books but with the audio books I can work and hear great stories at the same time.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
