Vermont

My trip from Florida to Vermont was uneventful, which is what I hope for in most any trip. The traffic was steady but not also moving right along. I stopped for gas and twice at state welcome centers for a stretch break.  I packed all my meals. I had my masks and sanitizers. I had disposable gloves for the gas pumps. I did stay at two hotels -- one in South Carolina and one in Pennsylvania.  I was careful and wore my mask when there was any possibility of interacting with others.

The protocol for Vermont is a two week quarantine for anyone coming from out of state, but residents/returning snowbirds can quarantine for one week and then get tested. I will do that and can feel safer having contact with family and doing the grocery shopping. Don has taken care of provisions for the interim. And he took wonderful care of my house plants in my extended absence.

It is somewhat strange because usually I am back for a VT spring and get to see the lilacs and the crabapple blossoms and the green buds. It is full summery VT now, much like late winter/early spring in Florida and so it is a bit disorienting.  And spring cleaning needs doing but it is so hot!

This is why it is called the Green Mountain State

  1. I am glad that your trip went so smoothly. I imagine it will be a bit of adjustment from being in Florida. Your Green Mountains look beautiful.

  2. Wow. What lovely green mountains. I must explore Vermont. You were brave to drive to far during a pandemic. How do they make sure you are sheltering in place?

    1. I guess it is a matter of trust. I have only one friend who is urging me to visit because she doesn't care about the virus/quarantining. I have been gone a long time, but I stay in touch with family and friends and they are supportive. To me it is common sense in self-care and looking out for others.

  4. I began one and then the screen blinked which I have never seen and no message. Honestly blogger can be so frustrating. I am glad your trip home was uneventful. You know how much VT means to me and I love those green mountains!! Hot though in VT? All my summers there were never more than 81-82. From Florida this would be a breeze no? And your reply above about common sense - we can see that it isn't common because more people would have it! :-)

  6. So glad you are back safely and that the trip was uneventful--the best kind. Glad you are out of Florida as Covid seems to be blowing up down there. I worry about my family living there. Good idea to self quarantine and test.

  7. Now I will picture you in lovely Green Vermont. We did some exploring in Vermont a few years back in late May, early June. We took a drive up to the top of one of the Green Mountains. We explored some back roads and found a cheese creamery and a wonderful furniture maker with furniture made out of sugar maple with sap tap holes. It was all wonderful.
We are pretty much quarantined here most of the time anyway. You'll be fine.

  8. Olga, I have never been to Vermont... but love that picture. In some ways, it reminds me of Hawaii... all that green! And I imagine it must be fun to be a snowbird.

  9. Beautiful green mountain! Glad you made it back safe and sound, Olga. Enjoy the summer. I always thought that hot is better than ice cold.

  10. Glad your drive was without problems. I think it is a good time to get out of Florida even though that was not your main reason. I think a week in quarantine is not too bad.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
