Shopping

I don't have a family to feed now, just myself. I am finding that if I am careful about planning I really don't have to grocery shop all that often, maybe once a month. I am using vegetables with a good shelf life and frozen. I am eating less bread and that is a good thing.

I keep a double list --  wants and needs. It is only when that needs list gets burdensome that I will go to the grocery store. Funny thing that I have noticed is that at first my wants list was long last month. This month the entire list is very short.

When I was doing my laundry I noticed that I really could replace worn out underwear and pajamas. Well, hardly a necessity, especially at a time when I could completely be going without and who would know most of the time!

I don't even know if the clothing stores are considered essential services so are open here. I really have been a hermit I guess.

I did make a resolution to NOT shop online. That was a hard one because I know it keeps people working, but the people who are most at risk at the minimum wage workers packing things in warehouses, not the CEOs who are getting rich.
Personally, I feel that if someone is risking serious illness to provide a service I need to look them in the eyes and say thanks.

  1. We seem to go to the market more than you do, because our consumption is higher. I guess if David were not living with me, I myself would consume less.

    1. It took me quite a while to learn to cook for one but it was also a process of learning what would please me, just me.

  3. I did receive a package from Amazon today, but we did holler "Thank you" as he hurried off the porch.
We use a lot of salad greens and other fresh fruits and vegetables and milk and eggs, most of which do not keep for a month. We could change our ways, I suppose, but we are pretty safe as we shop at our local Safeway. I think the clerks are now wearing masks and gloves. I hope so for their sake. I do worry about them. I'll find out the new rules for shopping when we go tomorrow morning.

  4. I'm managing every 10 days or so and I suspect I could go a bit longer but I find myself anxious to get and back again.

    Take care and stay well!

  5. I found I have cut back on many things and really am not missing much. I eat less via smaller portions. Instead of a full glass of milk I am now content with a half.I do have to struggle to keep my weight up but have maintained.
I do miss fresh greens a lot but am managing.

  6. My wife has been going to the store once or twice a week, in the morning when you have to be 65 or older to get in. I keep telling her to stop, we can manage, but she insists. We did do curbside delivery the other day ... it seemed pretty safe.

  7. We can go 3 weeks and maybe more. We tend to eat simple meals revolving around vegetables (some of which I now buy frozen). Plus, kale seems to last forever! I buzzed Bob's hair this week. It looks good if I may say so myself. Now, if only he could trim mine.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
