Dane

A walk to see the whales' tails.

I got out the sewing machine to make him an apron for his cooking lessons.
The lake was very inviting on hot, humid days.

Grandson Dane is 12 now and he has completed the sixth grade. All the time I was teaching I always marveled at how sixth graders would start off a school year is such an angelic mode and then switch to nascent middle schoolers by June.

Probably I had just noticed a trend all those years and not ALL twelve year olds automatically lose their sweet innocence. My grandson is still sweet.

He spent the past week with me and he still wanted to do all the grandma traditions. We spent a lot of time at the park and in the lake. It was hot and humid and he is a true water sign. He can swim around for hours at a time. Fortunately he no longer needs me in the water with him the whole time.

I took him one day to the card making group I meet with and he was a trooper about that. Although he did mention on the way home, "I feel like I spent the morning with the Golden Girls. Maybe you should name yourselves that. Or how about the Glitter Gang?" He cracks me up sometimes.

Now he is into learning to cook so we spent time in the kitchen. I taught him how to make risotto and he made a lentil soup that was delicious. We made oven fried chicken and French toast too. One night we went out for Chinese food. I took him to the new Co-op store and he wanted to go back the next day to look at all the different varieties of rice in the bulk bins. He harbors a plan to completely take over his mom's kitchen. My daughter is not at all fond of cooking so I don't think she will object.

We of course took in a Lake Monsters baseball game. He is hoping to be back here so we can go on July 27 when it's a Star Wars night at the ball park. I embarrassed myself mightily when we went to the flea market and I picked out a book I thought he would like but it was Star Trek not Star Wars and then the vendor got in on giving me a big lecture about the difference.

  1. Sounds like a great time! I suspect he'll never lose his sweetness with you.

  2. It's hard to keep up when you are two generations removed, but I'm sure Dame forgives you for the Star Wars/Trek mistake.
It sounds like you both had a wonderful time! Good job, Grandma.

  3. One of my grandsons is also 12. He spent a week with us for Thanksgiving 2 years ago. He was very into Japanese tea... and made several recipes for Japanese white tea while here. They were very good. Lucky for him, he got to go to Japan just last week. Can't wait to find out how it went. Sounds like you and your grandson had a good visit.

  4. What a neat name he has and how delightful he is avoiding the 12 year old mold. Like his sense of humor. Keep enjoying that young man and I think Grandmothers are exempt from the teen rebellion traumas, especially the cool GMs.

  5. He is such a sweetheart, and he does adore you. I like his ability to cook. Next time, take a photo of the food he creates in your kitchen.

  6. Hahaha. That sounds so wonderful. He has gotten so big and looks so grown up. That little man may be your sweetheart when he comes to visit but he'll be struggling into manhood soon.

  7. Our eldest granddaughter is the same age. She'll do little girl things, to help out her sister. She is still sweet, as well. I enjoyed reading about your adventures. We're doing Gramma Camp the last week of July!

  8. Sounds perfect. I look forward to my grandchildren growing up a little (they are 2 years; 6 months; 4 weeks, and negative 5 months) so I can enjoy playing with them and sharing ... well, just sharing life.

  9. How nice that he remains his happy youthful self at age 12 and you can enjoy each other as usual for now.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
