Thoughts

Well, May is coming to an end. So far we have had rain 21 out of the 28 days. Everything is very green -- it is the Green Mountain State after all. The spring blooms are coming and going in their timely succession so it has been beautiful to look at, but often wet. And often cold. I has the gas heater going tonight and a sweater over my sweatshirt.

I do remember heading out for a Memorial Day weekend camping trip, 1993 as a matter of fact. We went back in the house to get winter jackets because it was snowing. And, yes, we went anyway and it wasn't too, too bad.

Growing up Memorial Day was always a trip to Pennsylvania where my grandparents are buried. We would usually be making the trip at night after my dad got home from work. There was a trip to the florist the next day and then making the rounds of the cemeteries.

At school we would have to memorize the Gettysburg Address and then walk from the school to the village green where there was a memorial. These days it seems forbidden to recognize any kind of holiday in schools. I'm glad I grew up when I did. I know there were plenty of things going on then that were not great, but being a kid was okay.

I have most of my doctor visits out of the way. My eye pressure is good and cataracts will go for at least another six months. My teeth are polished and clean. I did need to have a cavity refilled but it took less than a half hour and the Novocain did not make my face swell up so that was okay. My doctor did some blood tests but was not sure what is up with my white fingernails so if it gets worst I will get a referral to a dermatologist (or perhaps a nutritionist. I distinctly hear my mother's voice warning me to eat more eggs whenever she noticed white spots on my nails. She would be force feeding me eggs if she saw them now!)

My mother did have her opinions. She was actually ahead of her time on a lot of things and more and more I realize she was a lot smarter than people/I gave her credit for.

  2. You and DJan are both sharing health reports - both good. My latest was good too. I have a mammogram scheduled for Thursday, and hearing test and hearing aid check for the week after, I think. We are monitoring my aortic valve stenosis every 6 months now, since progression has speeded up. Not looking forward to a valve job in a year or two.
We could use some of your Vermont rain. We may be in trouble here on the left coast come summer.

  3. We haven't had much rain here. Hurricane weather is right around the corner so we'll see what it brings. I'm afraid it is all stored up in the skies. Hope the disaster bill passes soon just in case.

  5. is it age, is it wisdom, that makes us all appreciate the way we were raised? I have been thinking about this a lot lately.
On to trivial....we are having summer Miami weather here. It sucks. I don't want winter, but 95 and high humidity in June is not something I want either. I am warning you now Olga, I am winning the big lottery and moving somewhere it stays 65-75 all the damn time! Wanna come?

  6. White fingernails might indicate anemia. Get a blood test. And, yes, I had to memorize the Gettysburg Address in 5th or 6th grade. Each student had to stand in front of the class and recite it solo. Ugh.

  7. I would so gladly take some of your rain. We've had less than inch of rain throughout the entire month. Between the poplar tree fuzz and the smoke from forest fires in Alberta our air quality is poor.

I agree, we have a tendency to short change the knowledge of our parents and only realize it as we age.

  9. We have had endless rains also and we are more than green. As I drove from town today I saw all the over growth from the rains and thought if we humans ceased to be, plants would take over. Well that and mosquitoes.

  10. Good to hear that your health is doing well. I'm due to start my annual doctor visits soon. Always nice to get them out of the way. As for rain, we've definitely had our fill. It poured earlier today along with all the severe weather reports and Tornado warnings. Seems to be over now... in this area anyway.

  11. Those oldies had natural remedies that scientists today have refined and continue to use!! My mother was the same.

  12. My mother still insists on some of her notions even though I've told her it's been proven untrue.

I can't believe June is about here. Yikes! So wonderful to hear your dental and health visits turned out well. That's always a relief!

  13. My mother had two remedies for all maladies...Vicks Vapor-Rub for all external needs, and Phillips Milk of Magnesia for anything internal. No matter what the ailment a "good cleaning out" was called for. I can still see the vile stuff quivering on the tablespoon as she brought it to my clenched mouth. Having won the Josef Stalin Motherhood Award in 1955, she was very persuasive and refusal was not an option.

If this seems a bit harsh, it was probably a vast improvement over her father who used turpentine for all external needs.

  14. I finally got the issue of not being able to comment resolved.here it has been just as cool. In fact today it will only be 12C even with sunshine. I guess we are getting this cooler air from up high?
We have Victoria Day long weekend here and occasionally it has been hot enough to swim. The last two years have been cool all the way up to July.
Still the wild wind and all the rain are an issue globally.
I leave for UK and they had great weather up until tomorrow when temps will drop and rain will be abundant. Ugh
But looking forward to seeing grand kids

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
