October

We are having a rainy week.  And cold.  The temperature today was in low 50's.

Time to turn on the heat.  I am wearing a long sleeve tee, a sweater over that, a fleece jacket over that.
That's to be indoors.  I put my rain jacket over all when I had to go out to the grocery store.  The damp is right down to my bones and my fingers are freezing.  Just would be hard to work with mittens on.

Since I felt more or less housebound today, I made an attempt to decorate for the season.  I have a fall leaf decoration hanging on the front door.
I dragged this out.
Since I don't really have a wall to hang it on, I put it on the table.

I put the owls and pumpkins I made on the mantel.

I made these decorative lanterns out of card stock for my grandchildren. They have a battery/fake votive inside to make them glow.

Kristen likes cats.

Dane likes Halloween.

I try to do a week long diet cleanse in the spring and in the fall.  I am eating a very high number of raw or lightly steamed vegetables along with one protein shake a day. No caffeine, no alcohol, no sugar.  Lots of salads.  This is why I have to keep busy -- because the other thing  like to do on a damp cold day is bake.

  1. ooh I so understand. Cold makes me want to bake and cook and of course eat. But today was 82 here. I will be in your neck of the woods next Wed and will pack my wellies for the rain and my fleece and scarf and gloves for the time I'm there. I hope to come home and put them away for a few more months. At the very least as much as I wish to see the people there I hope to see fall foliage. Keeping my fingers crossed.

  2. We are on the island for a few days. Yesterday we were able to get the yard work done here, but today, one squall after another has rolled in off the bay. It makes me want to eat. I think I am going to need a vegetable cleanse too.

  3. We've also had spats of rain but, of course, no cold. In fact, I picked up two sleeveless shirts on sale today. I figured I could get a couple of months wear out of them. Haha.

  4. we won't see cooler weather for another couple of weeks, at least. Will get a bit of rain late Wed. due to Hurricane Rosa, though...

  5. I could manage no alcohol and no sugar but no caffeine would do me in.

  6. Our weather has been overcast and drizzly - and although not cold, a bit chilly. And I did bake... tea cakes with a caramel glaze. Yes, coffee (or tea) and a warm fresh baked cookie on a chilly rainy afternoon is my fix. But I'm sure yours is a healthier choice.

And I did spend a lot of time sculpting and underglazing.... so I was somewhat productive.

  7. Pretty decorations for your home. I guess you are yearning for warm Florida?

  8. Like the idea of battery votive candles. Safe and pretty. Damp cold is miserable. We are still in the high 80's here. Sigh.

  9. Lovely decorations! I especially like that they are handmade.

We've been getting freezing temps overnight; not entirely unexpected but I would appreciate warm fall days to finish yard work. Not to be, at least not this week.

    Stay warm and dry.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Walking

I have always been a walker. Now that I have a high energy dog there is no excuse for not getting out there. And the weather is not an interfering factor here. Early morning and early evening are our preferred times so even when it gets hot we should be okay. We can get quite a long walk going around the neighborhood, greeting neighbors out working in their yards or walking their own dogs. But the landscape changes quickly just beyond the confines of the housing developments. It could be described as natural Florida or as sites of future housing developments. I do prefer the first option. And I really enjoy being out in natural areas so I often opt to head to a nature setting. I would have liked to put a picture here. Unfortunately my iPhone has made a unilateral decision. It will no longer be sending my photos to my computer. Why? I have no idea. However, we may be walking along happily enough -- me listening to the birds or trying to identify wildflowers and other plants while L...

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!
