Hot Summer

Wildflowers I picked on a walk down a dirt road.

The weather has suddenly turned cooler.  I was using the small AC unit in my bedroom right up until this past Tuesday when the temperature reached 90ยบ and the humidity was about 90%.

I have had that little AC unit for years and I usually don't even bother to drag it out.  And if I do, it is usually just for a week tops that it get used in July.  But this was a hot and humid summer -- practice for if I ever move to Florida full time.

I was listening to a piece about Rachel Carson on public radio last Sunday.  I knew about her book Silent Spring and her warnings about the chemicals impacting the environment.  I did not know about her concerns about global warming.  She had started working on a book about that before her death.  She was charting increasing ocean temperatures along the eastern coast back in the 1940's and 50's.

There is an interesting article about Rachel Carson in the March, 2018,  New Yorker Magazine.

  1. Our weather here in the 20 yrs of living in the mid Atlantic has change dramatically. All so scary to me. And all the things we are spraying on our food, and what chemicals farmers are using that are going into water etc. It caused Izzy to become very sick from ingesting this water. The doctors first question was this water near a farm. We told her it was and then she knew why she was so very sick. The chemicals the farmers use with their fertilizer can kill an animal and hurt a human. What have we done to ourselves?

  2. I for one don't like hot and humid weather, so the a/c is usually turned on.

  3. Rachael was so far ahead of her time and piqued some of today's thinkers. Wish more had paid attention.

  5. We are cooling a bit also. Not sure how long it will last though because you can never trust Oklahoma weather.

  6. We woke up this morning to freezing temps, with a forecast of rain and possible snow. I'm not yet ready for it to be that cold!

It is frightening to think of the damage that has been done to our world. I think, however, that our children and grandchildren are more aware of the damage that we're doing and perhaps will be able to make the necessary changes to at least slow it down.

  7. I wonder what Rachel Carson would think of our current national efforts of environmental protection and concern for the climate. I image she is spinning in her grave.

  8. The irony is that the more we turn on the a/c, the more it heats up the environment, so the more a/c we need, etc., etc. I'm with you. I use the a/c maybe five days per summer. And otherwise ... I wear shorts!

  9. Yes, Carson was very forward thinking — ahead of her times.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
