Time with Friends

I had a wonderful time on Pratt Pond in southern New Hampshire with my friend Diane.  We were able to get in activity -- kayaking, walking, hiking.  We went to the Children's Fair in town on Saturday, an event that has been held for 170 years.  We went to Porter Hill Sweets, a local chocolate artisan that has become a tradition far more worthy than the Children's Fair in my book!

It was rainy some of the time so we played games and had quiet reading time.  We saw The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society on Netflix and we both enjoyed it.  We went to see A Man of Destiny at the playhouse in Peterborough.  There was a HUGE storm that hit just as the play was starting.  Lightning struck and knocked out the stage lights at the end of the first act, but show business and the play must go on.  They rigged up lights with extension cords.  Act 2 was a night scene so it wasn't so bad that the actors had to carry on while carrying lanterns.  It added some excitement.

Tomorrow I will meet my friend Ginnie for breakfast.  She is starting school on Thursday.  We were special educators together.  Now she is working as a para-educator in retirement.  We used to joke about that is what we would do in retirement . . . but I'm just as glad I am not living out that particular plan.

Tomorrow night I will be meeting with my favorite writing group and Thursday is getting together with the card making group.

I am truly blessed with friendships.

  1. Yes you are blessed, but it takes a good friend to have so many friends.

  3. As Tabor said, it takes a friend to have friends. Glad to hear you are having fun and NOT working as a paraeducator. I know I was happy to leave the classroom “cold turkey “ .

  4. Yes, you are blessed, and Linda is right too, as is Tabor. It takes being a friend to have friends. I too am glad I am not working as a paraeducator, nor am I subbing. I swore I would never do either after I retired, and I have not. I have taken long-term jobs for a semester or a year, but I was not going to sub. Now, I am so happy that I am fully retired!

I have been missing from blogging lately, and I found that my blog was no longer showing up in the Blogger reading list. I am hoping to get reconnected to my blogging friends again.

  6. I guess it is true--the show must go on. I have never seen it quite like you did. Kind of exciting.
So glad you had such a great time. You took advantage of each situation. Friends like that should be kept close.

  8. Lovely painting, btw. There is a lot to said for retirement, especially completely retired. I kind of like the notion that I haven't given my place of previous employment a thought in the past month. You do have wonderful friends, and as others have noted above, that no doubt is because you are a wonderful friend.

  9. Good friends attract good friends. It sounds like yours are solid.

I love your description of the play.

  10. I've reached an age when I envy those who still have good friends living with whom to share time. I could never in my wildest imagination have anticipated I would outlast so many. Make the most of these times as sounds like you're doing.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
