Road Work

Road work.  Everywhere.  Necessary, yes, but also so annoying.  The road crews make efforts to do work at night along main rush highways and that helps.  Still, the work has to get done while the weather cooperates, knocking off a good chunk of time here in Vermont.  If you travel even to the grocery store at this time of year, it is likely you will spend some time stopped at a one lane only road construction site.

Audubon print

I was stopped two days ago along my way home from a morning yoga class. Ahh, must have been the benefits of that final savasana.  I was in no hurry and I really had nothing pressing on my mind.  I was stopped next to a huge vegetable patch that belongs to local organic farmers along one side, more gardens and the river on the other.  Between the road and the gardens, wild flowers were in bloom --
thistle, chicory, Queen Anne's lace -- and a flock of goldfinch were attracted.  Monarch butterflies were flitting about as well.

I had a second's regret at not having my phone to capture the beauty, but then is that even possible.  I relaxed and enjoyed the show until the stop sign was rotated to slow.

That's what yoga brain can do.

  1. I saw a great spangled fritillary visiting our impatiens the other day. First one I have seen in years. We have had a couple dark phase eastern tiger swallowtails. The butterflies seem rare and late this year.

Road work can try one's patience but if you can enjoy nature in the process, it can be a lovely interlude. I am usually stuck is a wasteland of concrete and parking lots.

  2. Yesterday, Vice President Pence flew into Hawaii to bring back the bones of American soldiers killed during the Korean War. You can imagine the traffic tied up around the airport area.
    Those flowers are very pretty.

  3. Yoga brain is good. I miss yoga. My gal left the area. It was senior/gentle yoga, which I found to work best for me. :-(

    1. It as amazing how many variations there are to yoga practice. The class I take in Florida is a very gentle approach. I take several different classes while in VT because the studio where I go does an excellent job of getting wonderful teachers.

  4. Smart way to take advantage of a forced stop. I use to enjoy those in Florida when the draw bridges would halt traffic for about 5 minutes. I would get out and enjoy the view.

  5. Sounds like the perfect moment to slow down and appreciate the beauty around you.

  6. I think this summer is 'construction time' everywhere. It's difficult to get to places sometime. But of course it has to be done (in most cases anyway) so we'll just endure for a bit. As for Yoga, I too think it's wonderful. I take a combination aerobic exercise and yoga class and although the aerobic part wears me out, I know it's all good.

  7. A very nice attitude about one of life’s many little irritations. Now to the seriousness of the situation, why did you not have your phone with you?

    1. Oh, don't you start too! I am not attached to my phone. And somedays I am doing well if I have my car keys the first time I go out the door.

  8. we have great weather, so construction here is slow and non-stop. Be grateful for weather! LOL ;)

  9. Finding joy in the moment isn't always easy, but you obviously found it despite the construction.

We always say here in Saskatchewan that we have two seasons, winter and construction. I'm not certain which one is the longest. :p

  10. I wish there were more road working going on around here. Just lots of apartments going up here, with the same roads.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Walking

I have always been a walker. Now that I have a high energy dog there is no excuse for not getting out there. And the weather is not an interfering factor here. Early morning and early evening are our preferred times so even when it gets hot we should be okay. We can get quite a long walk going around the neighborhood, greeting neighbors out working in their yards or walking their own dogs. But the landscape changes quickly just beyond the confines of the housing developments. It could be described as natural Florida or as sites of future housing developments. I do prefer the first option. And I really enjoy being out in natural areas so I often opt to head to a nature setting. I would have liked to put a picture here. Unfortunately my iPhone has made a unilateral decision. It will no longer be sending my photos to my computer. Why? I have no idea. However, we may be walking along happily enough -- me listening to the birds or trying to identify wildflowers and other plants while L...

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!
