Grandson Visits

Dane is visiting his granny this week.  We have a basketball.  There's a hoop set up on what used to be the tennis court.  He brought his penny board and a scooter.  There's an exercise path behind the local elementary school.  He rides around that about three times to my twice.

We found a pogo stick for $3.00 at the Habitat for Humanity store.  He has been practicing with that while I fix dinner and can watch him out the window. He said he wanted the pogo stick because he wants to be "cool." (Oh, honey, you have a hard life ahead of you.)

And then there is the lake.   He loves to swim. I am pretty sure if we did nothing else but stayed in the water for his entire visit, he would not have any complaints.

Yesterday, my sister came over with her grandson who is visiting from California this week.  We thought it would be good to get the two rather socially awkward young men together.  (That's my thought, not my sister's -- although if I asked her she would probably agree.)  Dane is 11.  Cy is 12 and a good foot taller than Dane.  We took them to play mini golf, then out to lunch, then down to the lakefront bikeway with board and scooter.  They wore themselves out while my sister and I had a nice walk and talk.

After they left, Dane and I went for a swim and then had a movie night.

The temps are supposed to go back into the 90's today so I am thinking a lake day is on the agenda.

Being retired means I can sleep all next week.  My sister is still working.  I don't know how she copes.

  1. What lake is that? I think staying in the water all day sounds perfect. But after a week of an 11 yr old boy, I too would need a week of sleep to return to normal. I used to summer at a small lake in Vermont called Lake St Catherine. I remember thinking it was pretty big but as an adult I have seen it and it is very small. But my memories of summers there are wonderful.(and maple syrup)

    1. Lake Iroquois, which is even smaller than Lake St. Catherine (Which I always thought was a beautiful spot BTW). It is partially in the town where I live, has a nice clean beach and a fairly shallow swim area and no structures to dive from. I am avoiding the diving thing since my grandson expressed an interest in doing some and I don't want to be responsible for keeping that close an eye on him. That and he'd want me to dive with him.

  2. Clearly not a Florida lake! It is hard to keep with boys this age. My 13-yr-old is due on Sunday night, but we have to return him on Thursday as his summer schedule is rather busy.

    1. I was thinking my grandson would be less interested in spending time with me, but he is still my pal and most ardent admirer.

  3. I almost fell out of the chair laughing:

"He said he wanted the pogo stick because he wants to be "cool." (Oh, honey, you have a hard life ahead of you.)"

Dane, my man, listen to Grandma. Some thing are just cooler than others.

    1. Some things just have to be learned the hard way apparently. We can't save them from all mistakes.

  4. My only grandchild, a 16 year old boy, spends Friday afternoons with me. I pick him up around noon and feed him, which may be why he continues to come. He’s a man of few words. Mostly looks at a screen of some king, although we did watch and discuss all the episodes of the documentry “Wild Wild Country that happened in Oregon in the 80s.

    1. My 17 old granddaughter talks to me, but she would much prefer to be with her friends. It still takes my grandson a long time to start missing his friends though. He says he would move in for the whole summer if he could.

  5. Pogo stick or not, at least he isn't glued to a device working on carpel tunnel. What a healthy, normal Grand you have.

    1. He plays games or watches tv sometimes, but I like to keep him moving as much as possible (I am the hyper one though) and we do have some good conversations together too.

  9. It's nice to have such a good relationship with your sister. I am glad the two boys got along, too. Enjoy their company.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
