Cooking

I think the a big part of cooking successfully is paying attention.  There have been times in my life when I have been really into cooking.  There have also been those times when I am just not that interested and it is easy to get distracted.  Distracted cook = failed dishes.

I remember a time I was in a drug store with my first husband.  I found him looking at greeting cards.  He had one in his hand and his efforts to keep himself from guffawing loudly had his whole body in a kind of concerning tremor.  The card face: I wanted to get you something useful for your birthday. Inside the card: but you already have a smoke detector.

Yeah, so amusing.

I did manage to get through Thanksgiving dinner without burning anything, although the mashed potatoes were not hot enough.  The next day I set of the alarm with burnt toast.

  1. Sometimes cooking is just what you do to keep fed, other times it is a passion. I like to be invited to dinner where it is a passion.

  2. I do love to cook... when time permits. I find cooking to be an art form and like any art, sometime the muse is with you and other times not.

    1. I like thinking of it that way -- as an art form.

  3. When we have cooked as many years as we have, we can't help but screw up now and again. The pie hubby made yesterday had soggy bottom crust, but to his defense I did not supervise and he rarely makes pies!

    1. Ha! The odds sometimes work against me then/the muse lets me down/I have lost the passion.

  4. Well we all can't be Mario Batali, chef extraordinaire. A tip for mashed potatoes is to put them in the crock pot on warm with lid and they will be perfect when all is ready to be put on the table. I did that for years. Made them early, put them in the crock pot and when all the other items were ready, put them in a bowl on the table and they were steaming hot and not the least bit dried out.

    1. I will keep that tip in mind for the next big meal I cook . . . most likely nest Thanksgiving. I better write it down somewhere!

    1. Yes, there is always that. I have known couple who always eat out, but I could never do that.

  6. I am enjoying the kitchen a little more since I moved in with my daughter but I still don't really cook. I put things together. I guess that is good enough until the urge hits me.

  8. Good to know the love for cooking comes and goes. Right now mine has gone and I feared it might be permanent. Now I have hope.

    1. I have too many hobbies demanding attention, so my focus tends to go in cycles. This time of year, throwing things in a pot with some stock = cooking abowl of soup and that is good enough.

  9. If your only mishap was cool potatoes, you did quite well. Bask in glory over the successes, and don't sweat cold potatoes. Burnt toast? Wouldn't that be the toaster's fault?

    1. I made a not of the crock pot idea from above.
I have a temperamental toaster that I know needs watching. Someday I will get around to a replacement.

  10. Someone with a weird sense of humour put a smoke detector very near my toaster . It's probably why I tend to eat oatmeal .

    1. You found an obvious solution although I have been known to leave a pot or a kettle unattended while I go off to do something else.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
