Another Trip

I left my new car behind and flew to Florida.  I was wanting to see for myself what damage vixen Hurricane Irma brought to Venice.  There are still piles of fallen trees and other brush along many streets just waiting for pickup from the county.  There a number of fences down and some of the street signs were crumpled and bent. People who were here say it was scary but it could have been so much worse.

My place has a little bit of water damage -- a spot on the ceiling and the front door frame.  I have a can of Killz Premium ready to apply.  The screen door is a little askew, but I am not having much luck getting anyone to attend to that.  Eventually I will probably just have it replaced. Area handymen are out straight.

Outside, my bougainvillea was sheared off but it is already sending out new shoots.  It's a survivor (aka weed).  The frangipani I thought was uprooted was really not uprooted.  It just was bent over and is blooming away as it reclines on the lawn.

I can't move it.  My neighbors tried to pull it upright but they couldn't move it either.  Good luck finding someone to tend to this in the near future, I suppose.  I think I will take some cuttings and try to root them and just replace this tree entirely as it has gotten quite large.  YouTube shows how it's done.

Other than the aforementioned water stains, things look good inside.

I have yet to take a stroll around the park to check out how others fared, but my immediate neighbors all look to be in good shape.

My heart is definitely going out to those affected by the brunt of hurricanes this season and for those who can only watch as their homes go up in a flash of flames and smoke.

Yes, so many are suffering from devastation and recovery will be a slow process.

  4. So glad you did so well. It is mind blowing as we see area after area tormented with wind, flood or fire this year.

  6. Seems like you were one of the lucky ones! Still, I realize the whole thing can be upsetting. Anyway, relax, don't worry, enjoy yourself, you have all winter to get things straightened out.

  7. Thank goodness for the minimal damage in your home. It's been a horrid year for natural disasters, fires, floods and storms of all sorts, and the news seems to get worse all the time with shootings and bombings. We feel a bit insulated here in my part of the world, but winter's coming.

    Enjoy your visit to Florida!

  9. Sure glad to hear your property damage is minimal. Several of Bob's family live in FL (most in Sarasota area). Many of them evacuated or went to shelters, but they also sustained little damage. Thank goodness! I just can't imagine the fires in CA. All those homes/businesses and lives lost.

  10. Its rather amazing that as close as the storm was that you did not sustain more damage. Perhaps another sign from the Universe?

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Walking

I have always been a walker. Now that I have a high energy dog there is no excuse for not getting out there. And the weather is not an interfering factor here. Early morning and early evening are our preferred times so even when it gets hot we should be okay. We can get quite a long walk going around the neighborhood, greeting neighbors out working in their yards or walking their own dogs. But the landscape changes quickly just beyond the confines of the housing developments. It could be described as natural Florida or as sites of future housing developments. I do prefer the first option. And I really enjoy being out in natural areas so I often opt to head to a nature setting. I would have liked to put a picture here. Unfortunately my iPhone has made a unilateral decision. It will no longer be sending my photos to my computer. Why? I have no idea. However, we may be walking along happily enough -- me listening to the birds or trying to identify wildflowers and other plants while L...

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!
