Never Say Never

My condo has a teeny tiny kitchen.  It has what I need to cook for myself although some might find it lacking because I do not have a microwave.

I had a small coffee pot -- one of those Mr. Coffee kind that made two cups even though it claimed to make five.  That was fine as I seldom to never drink more than two cups.  Unfortunately, I cracked the carafe and I could not find a replacement at nearby stores.  I bought a new coffee pot instead:

Hamilton Beach FlexBrew

My son worked for Keurig when they first came out with those K-cup things and I said, "What a waste.  I would never own one of those things?"

Well guess what.  I can now use K-cups to make my morning cup of coffee.  This coffee maker did come with a reusable filter so I fill that and enjoy my magic wake-up elixir. But it does have a cup that can be used for the individual pods.

That is what I will use nearly all the time.

  1. Years ago I purchased a Kurig/Mr. Coffee high bread that uses the K cups but works with the reusable/refillable cups. Comes in very handy when Rich wants a cup of coffee and I don't want to brew a whole pot. And you are so right about the 2 versus 5 cups! They must use a little tiny cup!

    1. Perhaps it is true about Americans being too used to supersizing, but I do like my coffee in a mug large enough to hold what it takes to kick start my day.

  2. I like the idea of reusable cups. They are getting smart. Like you I was put off by the original one as wasteful. Enjoy your coffee. I miss mine.

    1. I have gone through periods where I have not had coffee for one reason or another. I'm sure it is healthier that way, but I always go back to my morning habit -- the importance of ritual and all.

  3. I love the K cups and have managed to stuff down the guilt I feel at their wasteful, ungreen nature. SO convenient!

    1. You have a busier life than I do, but now I don't feel so intimidated by all your good works. Ha!

  4. I have a microwave but my son uses it more than I. It does come in handy when I'm cooking Christmas dinner as I can heat up vegetables and for melting chocolate for baking.

Did you know that the K-cups also come in cider and tea as well? I have Keurig but still use my large pot (I drink far too much of it) for coffee.

    1. Tea and cider? That really is too much!
I decided I needed counter space far more than I needed a microwave so I gave mine away and so far I have not even missed it.

  5. I use my microwave every day - for coffee. We have a standard coffee maker. We make a pot in the morning. Tom drinks it then - decaf, by the way. I have mine after lunch and in the evening, filling my mug about a third full of milk, then fill with coffee and microwave to reheat.

    1. Linda, Linda, Linda ... stale coffee reheated in the microwave? Surely you are not serious! LOL. Guess we all have our quirks.

  6. After many years of drinking lots of regular coffee I switched to decaf long ago. I do need a new coffee maker and debate what to get. Would only consider the Keurig if I could have a reusable cup. Enjoyed Keurig coffee friends brewed years ago. I use my microwave a lot -- would not want to be without it -- but not one of those little ones over a stove top.

    1. I drink half-caf. I will eventually get to decaf but I am going about it as slowly as possible.

  7. I admit I love my keurig. I use the pods and I certain there is a special place in hell for me because I am filling a landfill. I also use the cup like you have in the photo as well. I grind some of my favorite coffee beans and put it in there and make my own individual cup. I happen to love flavored coffee and there to brew a cherry choc that makes me very happy. Hubby laughs. I can have two cups of coffee and then fall fast asleep. I wish it had the same effect on me as others who can then stay awake for a week. :-)

  8. Coffee would keep me awake if I drank it in the evening although it didn't always. I know there was point in my life when I was so chronically sleep deprived that nothing could keep me awake if I had a chance to sleep. Not the healthiest nor happiest time in my life.

  9. The trouble with good coffee is that I tend to drink too much of it. As such, I use instant. It does the morning kick start and I can pretty much go on one cup a day. I can also take some grim satisfaction that I am not a coffee sophist.

  10. I did the same thing. I bought a fairly inexpensive Keurig style on sale one holiday. It also had the DIY pod. Since I like Folger Black Silk coffee, I dipped the pod for everyday use. Then the kids gave me some tasty k-cups on various holidays or my sister would give me some of the flavors she had to try. My coffee pots never last as long as they do for other people, so this one died too but it was an interesting adventure.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
