Freezing in Florida

I was not wrong about the red tide.  Yesterday we stopped at a park near the Gulf and lots of people were coughing.  There was an "airing of the quilts" event going on so we did spend some time looking at that before heading off for Shamrock Park and a long walk.  We played some games--something I am terrible at.  We went out to eat at funky Snook Haven--ribs.  The rain held off at least while we had our walk and did not interfere with the indoor activities.  Then we were on to a concert, a tribute of Pete Seeger.

We tried a walk on the beach this morning but it was far too cold and windy.  The beach was littered with dead fish.  And the red tide was causing respiratory distress.  We took a long walk of the Venetian Waterway instead then went to see the birds nesting at the Venice Rookery.

Bundled up and wind blown.

Concentration

We had a wonderfully fresh fish dinner at Captain Eddie's and later shared a glass of wine while watching Downton Abbey.

I do wish it would warm up--or at least have the wind die down so we could do some biking.  Still, it is nice to have company.

  1. What is a red tide? It doesn't sound very pleasant.

Have fun with your company and I hope it warms up soon!

    1. It is an algae bloom. Usually follows bad weather, so thank-you El Nino!

  2. You already knew about the red tide but went again anyway. Hope your fish dinner didn't come from any of those washed up on the beach. LOL

  3. You both look very happy, so that's the main thing.

  4. Yes you were right about the red tide. I looked it up after your last post and there were several articles about its arrival.

  5. That's a shame, the red tide.
You're so funny, out in the 'cold!' I walked on the frozen wetland again today!

  6. My brother is griping about the wind and biking also. Florida is a bit of a challenge this year but you are making the best of the situation. Well done.

  7. Well, there's Florida freezing, and then there's Northeast freezing. I'm back north where later in the week the high temp. is predicted at 18 degrees!

  8. I am wondering what is cold in Florida?
We are having a warm spell, temps up to 60 in the afternoon for a few days. It's nice to have blue sky.

    1. Um, we are having a cold spell, temperatures in the 60's. It's all a matter of perspective.

  9. I remember being there for a conference during red tide and could not go near the beach due to respiratory distress. These algae are really toxic and I am surprised how people just ignore that.

  10. I'm sorry your trip didn't go as you had hoped, but you made some memories with a friend anyway. That is a good thing. I had never heard of the dangers of a red tide when people have respiratory distress. I guess that is because I am a mountain girl and have not spent a lot of time at the beach. You look marvelous. Enjoy your time with your friend.

  11. We are having the craziest weather on this coast. Last Tuesday it was 37 at night and I had to scrape the frost off the windshield. This week it is 70 at night and 91 during the day! What will next week bring?!

  12. Red tide? That sounds disturbing though it might be pretty to look at. Scary about the fish though.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
