Fall Notes

I was at the orchard to get some apples.  A woman there explained why the honey crisp apples are so expensive.  Honey crisp have a very high water content and they grow quite large.  Therefore, they are very heavy and the tree branches are likely to break under the weight of too many apples.  The growers have to go out and hand pick to thin out the crop throughout the growing season.  It is a more labor intensive apple to grow.

The Columbus Day weekend is prime time for the leaf peeping tourists in Vermont.  Fortunately, I can just look out my kitchen window and see the color.  I think they are a bit muted this year compared to some years though.

We went to see Kim Russo in Hartford this past weekend.  It was pretty amazing.  No Spirit stepped up to give us messages, but the people who did obviously needed to hear what they were told.  And what better way to complete the experience than by taking a walk through the Cedar Hill Cemetery:

Mike's parents are buried here.  So is Katherine Hepburn.  And other notables are listed on the link above.

I am on day three of the preparation phase of the cleanse.  It is going well and already the stress related pimples have gone and my skin is clear again.  The real cleansing diet starts on Friday.  That is when I get to eat mung bean dahl and basmati rice three times a day for a week.  I am really hoping for that mental clarity!

Speaking of the cleanse--I went to pick some fresh parsley for my green soup.  I had an absolutely beautiful parsley plant, but this is what I found yesterday:
The plant was wilted.  Now, we have had a couple of mild frosts but everything else was still thriving, and parsley is usually the most hearty, not the least.  I noticed that the plant was broken off at the roots.  The soil had been flung out of the cement block.  I poked at the dirt and a vole popped out and scurried away. Grrr...darn critters!

  1. So glad you are having good luck with your cleanse. Love it when people take control of their health.
I am SO sorry about your voles. I am plagued with them and their cuteness does not compensate for the destruction they cause. If you find a way to get rid of them, let me know.

  3. I did not know that about Honey Crisp apples, just knew they were very pricey.
I had to look up Kim Russo. I medium, huh. OK?
And why are you doing this "cleanse"?

  4. Time to get out the caster oil and mix with a sprayer on the hose. That is the only thing I have found that drives my voles and moles away.

  5. We have gophers! They are much larger and really nasty! But I think they have finally moved across the street. They just put in a new lawn last year and the gophers seem to be enjoying it!

    1. We seem to trade the critters back and forth with neighbors too.

  6. You need my dog Slim. She chases moles into their holes so deep that sometime all I can see is her tale.

    1. Maybe I can rent her? Actually, since I am moving, I will let the new owners deal with those pesky critters!

  7. Good luck with the cleanse -- I'm not brave enough to try it! The fall photos are beautiful.

  8. What beautiful fall colors! We only have a couple of varieties of trees in Southern CA that change colors, because of our temperatures, all the rest never drop their leaves, so they are green all year long. Trade off, I guess. :)

when I gave up wheat products, I got such mental clarity; they call it getting rid of 'brain fog' which I didn't even realize I had until it was GONE. Good luck!

  9. I learned some interesting facts about my favorite apple, the Honeycrisp. I love when they come into season. We have voles and some winters they really do damage to my gardens. I see their handiwork when the snow melts in the spring. I know you're having fabulous fall colors now - enjoy!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
