A Curious Thing

The other day I was listening to a conversation among some women at yoga class.  They were discussing new mattresses and a couple of them were advising the woman who wanted to buy a new mattress to spend a lot of time testing them out.  Stretch out in the store and stay there longer.  If you have a partner, make sure that person is there as well.

This struck me because I had been thinking earlier about the people that bought my house.  They got the building inspection report but they only actually got to see the house once.  I don't know how long they spent looking at it, but they were gone when we went back home after two hours.  That doesn't seem like a lot of time spent for such a major purchase.

I mean we test drive cars.  We test out mattresses.  We try on clothes and walk around in new shoes before we buy.  At least we used to before online shopping.

I saw the condo I am buying and I went back and was there for the building inspection.  I still wish I had taken a tape measure to check out some of my plans for furniture placement.  I am sure there will be surprises, but I do feel as though I have a good idea of what the place will be like.

I hope the new owner here will feel the same way.

  1. My daughter was like that. She only saw the house from pictures and videos. She finally went there this week, and everything was just as she had envisioned. Maybe it's us!!

  2. I love planning the placement and layout of furniture in a new house, new condo, or new room. I make maps of where everything should go. Lots of fun. Good luck, Olga.

  3. Perhaps those that bought your house knew exactly what they wanted and when they found it they took it. They might be very experienced in house buying.

  4. Very good point although I must admit when we looked at this house I knew within minutes that I loved it and we would be really happy here -- which we are. Now of course the fact that the kids new house was only 1 mile away might have had some impact!

  5. I'm with you on this. BIG TIME. Got to remember that tape measure when we start looking in AZ in a few years. ;)

  6. I think those surprises are part of the fun of buying a new home. With my current home I kept saying "wow, I am so glad they thought to do that" for the first month or so.

  7. When we were buying this house, I think we saw it at least three times. It might have been four. I know we saw another place four times. I did not want to make a mistake. I wanted to see how my furniture would work. I wanted to look for things I might have missed. I learned the hard way with other house purchases. One should really check things out.

  8. Hmm... you have given me something to think about before I buy my next house. Thank you!! Guess one reason we don't stay longer in the houses we are buying is because those who are still living in them don't want us staying over night with them. ha ha

  9. Reminds me of the story (possibly apocryphal) of how Katharine Hepburn was looking to buy her house in Connecticut. She went in the bathroom, ran the water, took off her clothes and took a shower. When she came out she explained to the shocked real-estate broker that she was buying the house; she liked her showers; she wanted to make sure the water pressure was good, that there was plenty of hot water, and that she would be satisfied with the shower experience. What's wrong with that?!?

  10. I would never trust to buy a house without seeing it several times at different times of the day. Going with the inspector is also a good idea.

  11. I knew this house was for me when I had been wandering out for nearly 45 minutes. It just felt like home and because it was so much bigger than my current home I never worried about furniture placement. I did, however, bring my adult children with me for another viewing since they would be living with me.

Now my next place, I'll try to remember to take a measuring tape because I know it will be smaller.

    Good luck with the move!

  12. They may have looked at lots of houses before they found yours, and just knew they had finally found what they wanted.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
