On the Water

Google image

In this picture, Venice on the right and Nokomis is on the left.  If I remember correctly, what is now Nokomis was once the old Venice--but don't quote me on that and, quite frankly, I am feeling way too lazy right now to look it up.

I just thought that this aerial view spoke to why the name Venice was chosen for the area.  I have not seen a gondola around anywhere, but if you had a boat, you could definitely spend some time on the water without even venturing out into the Gulf of Mexico.

Sometimes it seems too bad that gondolas are not the preferred method of transportation.  There are three draw bridges in Venice, Florida, to accommodate the tall masts of sail boats or the sheer size of some of the yachts you might sea cruising the Intracoastal Seaway.  Best not to be in a big hurry to get to the beaches on a good boating day.

Someday maybe I will get to ride in a gondola in Venice, Italy.  But I wonder if the color of the water will be quite as lovely.

  1. Thank you for sharing the map and a glimpse of where you spend your winters. I had no ideamof where this was or what it looks like. I have never been to Florida. Yes, I can see why it is named Venice.

  2. What a pretty spot! No wonder you enjoy spending your winters there...it is lovely.

I've never been to either Venice, and Nokomis in Saskatchewan (there is one) looking nothing like this one.

    Have a great week!

  3. Lovely looking place. Indeed gondolas would be a wonderful idea.

  4. This does look very lovely. I was just on a gondola in Venice in October. However, you know what? I've never been to Florida and we MUST get ourselves over there. I've heard how terrific it is there.

  5. Beautiful shades of blue and green. It looks like the perfect place for gondolas. I have never been to Florida but it looks beautiful in this pic. Maybe one of these days...

  6. How exciting to see this aerial view of Venice, Florida. You were so smart to think of sharing it. I had no earthly idea what it looked like and find it most appealing. Makes me wonder about an aerial view of New Orleans. So much water crossing to get there but I know it would not be as lovely.

  7. That aerial shot is cool. I went to school in Sarasota but never saw what Venice looked like in that context. I just remember a place with a black sand beach.
At least when the bridge is up you get to see how the one percent live.

  8. Water in Venice (Italy) can be quite disappointing. Even some days the smell is enough to make you realize the romance of the image of Venice is stronger than the reality.

  9. That's a lovely aerial view.
I have been to Venice, Italy. Lots of fun there.

  11. Your Venice does look beautiful and I bet the water is a LOT cleaner than the other Venice, but I would be willing to go check it out! There is an area here in southern California where you can go take gondola rides but I've never done it. And I really should!

  12. Happy 2015, Olga. I see you're back in a warm climate - beautiful, too.

  13. Thanks for sharing this. Actually, I had just looked up where Venice is about a week ago because hubby and I are coming to Florida next month. I wanted to see where Venice is because we might come and visit the place. I read in the AAA TourBook the following: "Venice has a distinct Mediterranean ambiance with Northern Italian influences." No gondolas are mentioned, but it says it is a popular destination for boating. I think we will try to get over to check it out. If we do, do you want to meet for coffee? Let me know via email.

  14. My dad tried to use his gondola on the intracostal canal in Florida and nearly sank the boat! The tides and currents are too strong and he had to resort to using small trolling motors on the gondola.
You might be wondering why he had a gondola. . . when he and Mom visited Venice Italy he became enchanted with the gondolas and had one --a wedding gondola-- shipped to Ft. Lauderdale where they had a condo, He eventually donated it to the Boy Scouts!

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
