Weekend Update

The day after Thanksgiving was always Mike's favorite day of the year.  Absolutely NO eating of leftovers.  Early on it was watching Planet of the Apes movies with his brothers and ordering in pizza.  In more recent years it was an outing--maybe to Cedar Hill Cemetery or to the Wadsworth Atheneum.

That was just a preliminary sidelight to the main event as far as Mike was concerned.  The main event was a trip to Hartford's Franklin Street, once the heart of the Italian section of the city.  For Mike, it was pure nostalgia and real comfort food. Nothing says "Thanksgiving" like a salami and provolone grinder* and a bag of chips from Giant Grinder.

Then, on to Modern Pastry Shop for a box of assorted Italian cookies to bring home--or maybe gobble down on the trip back to Vermont.

Life changes.  Established traditions change as well.  We all have to work around that fact at some point.  New traditions come into being and that is not such a bad thing.  But we also want to preserve something of our pasts.

The day after Thanksgiving (which was actually very pleasant and not nearly as trying as I made it out to be in my previous post), I left for a trip to Connecticut.  I joined Mike's sister and brother and families for dinner at an Italian family restaurant--Roma's in East Hartford, where they make the best eggplant parm I have ever tasted, on Friday night.

On Saturday my sister-in-law and I walked, talked, shopped, took in a movie, had a lovely salmon dinner, drank wine, and just had a good time together.  I am sure that Mike was smiling down on my new kick off to the holiday season, although with a tear for the lack of a salami and provolone grinder (especially for it being replaced with eggplant).

And now, a week of diet and fasting and exercise.

*Grinder is New England for sub, hero, hoagie, etc. kind of sandwich.

  2. A great kick off to the holiday season. Don't be too hard on yourself with the diet, fasting, and exercise!

  3. Just enjoy those new traditions and don't worry about fasting till 2015. That is when we take our scales seriously once more.

  5. Sounds like a wonderful day, missing grinder notwithstanding!

It can be difficult to transition to the new traditions. My mom's birthday was Christmas Day and many of the old transitions ended with her passing. It's never been quite the same.

  7. Eggplant parmigiana is my favorite Italian dish. I don't really care for salami.

  8. I love the idea of skipping left overs the day after Thanksgiving. Good tradition to begin.

  9. Sounds like a great, nostalgic trip. But ... what do you do with all those leftovers?!?

  10. Lovely. I'm sure Mike would approve. I am sorry I have been such a bad blog friend. This has been a truly crazy quarter. My oldest started community college but she doesn't drive so between teaching and driving her around I don't have an extra minute. But the quarter is ending and next semester she'll have a more compact schedule, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

  13. I think I let my traditions go too fast and turn to something new too easily. Oh well.

  17. You're right. Traditions can always use a little modifications. It's fabulous that you were able to spend time with your sister-in-law.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
