Heat!

I have been cold for the past month and turning up the furnace did not offer relief so I was not surprised when the conclusion was, "You need a new furnace."

New air conditioner in Florida this past summer, which I was not expecting, and now a new furnace, which I kind of was expecting.  Some repairs were done to the old one in the hopes that it will last through the winter.  Always something, something with home ownership.  Of course the furnace is 50+ years old so I suppose I should not complain too much and a new one will be much, much more efficient.

I would have it done right away except that my fuel and furnace company is down to a one man operation at the moment and he really does not have the time to do it during the height of fuel season.  He did say he would though, should it fail completely and become an emergency.  I am glad my son will be here through the winter while I head to Florida.

That is the nice thing about small town Vermont--such good neighbors.  The fuel man checks the house twice a week when he goes by.  All my immediate neighbors keep a sharp eye on things.  I know who to call when I need help and that is a comfort.

  1. Small towns do have their perks. Good and not so good! Pretty soon you will probably be back down south, right?

  2. Our heat went off in one section of the house last week when the temps dropped. Needed a new thermostat and we were fine. It's always something!

  3. Ouch, home ownership is a pain. Renting does have perks. Every time something in my house breaks I wish I had a landlord to call. But then I get over it. So glad you have great neighbors. Me too.

  4. Furnaces, air conditioners, don't forget the dryer. Isn't life grand? Well better that stuff than your health.

  6. Sorry about the furnace but things happen. Our a/c leaked so we had it replaced. Now we wonder if my other a/c should be replaced, too, as it is old.

  8. Wow a 50 year old furnace? That's incredible.

I hope it keeps going for a bit longer and doesn't conk out when it's really cold. That is one of the pains of home ownership but if you ever decide to sell it will be a selling feature.

Small towns are great when people look out for one another, not so great when they are simply being nosey!

  9. You are right. Such a comfort. Our stove flicked on and off. They suggested we pull it out of the wall and unplug it. Get a neighbour to help! We don't really have neighbours! Hubby cannot, with his back issues. sigh.
We have new windows and now the snowblower is konking out! Money pit...

  10. It is great that you have someone to stay at your home and look after things while you are gone. You are lucky to live in a small town where the neighbors look out for one another. Sure hope that furnace gets you through one more season.

  11. Our furnace stopped working during the night a week or so ago. It was freezing in the house by morning and no hot water. Luckily, our plumber came immediately, and it just took a tiny fuse. I was glad we were home and the pipes didn't freeze.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
