Sudden Storm

Busy around the house today--tidying up, doing some laundry, filing or tossing the accumulation of papers on my desk, taking care of some bills, making those insurance calls--I took a break and sat outside to read for about a half hour after my lunch, then came back in to continue with the chores I'd set myself for the day.

The sun was bright and warm.  I kept my head in the shade but I stretched my legs out in the sun and relaxed.  I thought I would go back out a bit later and I left my book on the lounge chair near the garden.

How quickly things can turn!  The sky turned black.  The trees were swaying, trying to reach their leafy tippy tops to their roots.  I ran out to grab my book just as the first drops fell.  In a few seconds there was a deluge, lightening flashing and thunder rumbling.

My chores are done.  It has turned out to be a good day for curling up by the lamp and reading.

Do you think I can count saving that library book from a soaking as part of my library hours for this week?

  1. Hi Olga, Hope that book you're reading is a good one. It's been raining for several days here in the mountains - we have 22 month old Sam and I "might" be getting a bit of cabin fever. He's napping now - as rain still falls.

    1. I recently met a woman who is raising her three grandchildren. I am counting my blessings since then!

  2. So glad it wasn't a Kindle out there. That would be my luck. That should fall under library service though if you hadn't made it in time, pretty sure you would have just bought the book.

  3. The book left to get back too sounds familiar. The rain does not, although thunder showers are a possibility tomorrow.

  4. I once left a book out in a Florida rain...so mad, sad and bad me.

  5. I second Arkansas Patti's comment on the Kindle. They ain't worth a damn to read in the tub either, although I have read of people putting them in zip locks. Not a problem for me, because I take showers, and can't see the screen without my glasses.

I love thunder storms but to be honest, I do not trust them any longer. A couple years ago, we had a storm that sort of plopped it self over one of Pittsburgh's many ravines with a busy highway at the bottom. There was a flash flood, and 4 people were drowned. The water rose to 9 feet in just a few minutes. I live 7 miles from that site as the crow flies and we had a slight sprinkle. That frightens me. In summer, I check the internet radar before leaving the house.

  6. Those summer storms frighten me, and always have. We had a nasty one a few nights ago, and the lightning and thunder were non-stop. I was awake the whole time.
Good for you, saving that book. What kind of library work do you do?

  7. Ah, well, you're still alive. That's all that matters. Lol.

  8. I'm glad you could save the book and I sure wish you could send some of that rain our way! I love thunder storms and we almost never get those but just a little rain would be nice, too. Hope it is a wonderful weekend.

  9. Curling up inside with a good book during a thunder storm is a treat not a threat. Just so you have a flashlight nearby in case the electricity goes out.

  10. We are having some raindrops here. Just a few. Crossing my fingers for more.

  11. You bet your sweet bippie! It's a good day when you can sit and read! I finished a book today!

  12. Your weather and your scenery sound wonderful to me and there is nothing better to do with one's time than read a good book.

  13. Good for you that you remembered. I read with my Kindle Paper White which would have been a total loss if I left it in the rain.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
