A visit with grandson...

My grandson loves fruit.  His eyes lit up when he saw his breakfast of strawberries, blueberries, and watermelon.

I was working on preparing a chicken craft for the library story time next week.  He thought it  would be fun to put together his own Bob mask.
There were pine cones in  my neighbors yard when we went for a walk.  He wanted to send this picture to his sister because she used to be afraid of pine cones.   Teaser.

We took some rhubarb to my neighbor.  Dane had never tasted rhubarb before, but he liked it.  He wanted to make a rhubarb pie so we did.  He helped pick, clean, chop, and mix the filling.  He helped make the pie crust but I rolled it out and put it in the oven.  Conclusion: we make a good bakery team.
We went to the flea market and he bought a parrot (beannie baby) for 50 cents.  The parrot then accompanied us to the cemetery.  We visited the grave of his great grandparents and then walked around reading the names on other stones.  He told what he had learned about decoration day and that the flags marked the graves of those who had been in military service.  We acknowledged the sadness of remembering.
We watched two movies--The LEGO Movie and Alvin and the Chipmunks, the Squeakquel--and ate pop corn.

Since I just had the deck refinished, the deck furniture needed to be hauled out and hosed down.  Using the hose does not count as work or a chore so I had a very happy helper.

We did a bit of garden decorating.  I picked up the insulators at the flea market.

We took some walks.  I found a treasure box for him out in the garage so he would have a place to store the interesting rocks and other bits of treasure he might find along the road side.  He has taken on the family disgust with those who litter though.

It has a key!
We did another craft project--a tin can robot.  Unfortunately there was a minor hot glue gun mishap.
My daughter said I invited him just so I could make crafts and Dane said, "She is createtastic grandma!"

Grandma got tired of the wrestle on shoes and then tie them routine, so we went shopping for a new pair of Crocs for the summer ahead.  Maybe his feet won't grow so fast that these will actually make it to actual summer.
And there was the trip to see the sheep and baby lambs at my friends' farm.

We had stopped at Bristol Pond on the way to my house.  On the way home, we stopped at Bristol Memorial Park.

You have to look sideways at this.

For the rest of the trip Dane said a good way to kill time would be for me to give him multiplication and division problems to solve.  I said that I didn't know they taught that math in first grade.  He said they don't but he couldn't understand why since it was "wicked easy."

He had to get up for school on Tuesday morning, but I slept in til 8:30.

  1. Wow! What a cool little dude! But who had more fun, the kid or grandma? It looks to me like it was a draw. The treasure box is cool and having a key makes it even cooler.

I like your insulators they are in lovely shape.

  8. Your grandson is adorable, and he obviously enjoyed his adventures with you. I have never worn crocs in my life. I wonder if they are as comfortable as they seem. That pie looked delicious.

    1. I have never worn Crocs either. Seems like they would give you sweaty feet and I don't need that.

  10. What a wonderful visit! You know I hate rhubarb but any excuse to bake with a grandchild would make it worth eating! Your pie is just beautiful and I love your new title! Definitely deserved! You also deserved the sleeping in!!! My kind of visit!

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
