Movie

A special treat after Thanksgiving, my sister-in-law and I went to see the movie Philomena.  You can see a trailer, if you haven't already seen it on TV, here.  We enjoyed it.  We also did a yoga class--very relaxing.

Once again I was dumbfounded by the number of people hitting the stores on Black Friday and even on Black Friday Eve, formerly known as Thanksgiving.   Apparently, with turkey day being late this year there are "fewer" shopping days which justifies the stores being open on the holiday.  I guess some people are surprised that there will be another Christmas on December 25th so that explains why they couldn't plan ahead.

December all ready!  The frantic season has started.  I decorated the library for Christmas today.  The tree lighting on the Center green will be next Sunday and the library will have an open house.  I suppose I could hang a wreath on my own front door.  I am glad that I have grand children or I would skip Christmas altogether this year.

  1. I want to see that movie. I hear it is very good. I stayed away from shopping all weekend Seemed way too exhausting

  2. I plan to see that movie too. Thanks for the recommendation.
You have a reason this year for a bah humbug attitude, but I hope you can take some pleasure in the holiday season. While some see it as a frantic time, or too commercial, I find it exciting and fun and beautiful. I don't spent much time shopping in big stores and malls. Most of my actual shopping is done on line, and most of it is done now. That frees me up to "shop" in fun places without pressure. I like the decorating and the baking, even though it is a lot of work. I am fortunate that I have time to do it all, and good help from a husband who likes it too.

  3. I do so want to see the movie. Thanks for the recommendation. I also understand the feelings about Christmas. Holidays are hard. Really hard. I'm glad to hear you are staying busy.

  4. Now you've got us all wanting to see that movie. Judi Dench is so amazing!

OK, I admit it. We went out on Black Friday... EARLY. Then we went right home and took a long, long nap.

  6. Good for you getting out and going to a movie. That looks like it might have been a very emotional one. I love Judi Dench and just watching her in the trailer made me cry. Thanksgiving was very special with my kids and grandkids but I plan to have a quiet Christmas at home. This way the children can all rejoice and welcome Santa in their own homes with lots of Christmas fun. I deleted my earlier comment because it was not very upbeat and I'm not sure I did much better here. Oh dear......

  7. I would love to hang a wreath on my front door outside, but thieves would steal it, alas.

  8. I want to see that movie as well. I have a hold placed on the book and I want to read it first. Were you able to do a display of Christmas themed adult books at your library? I know this Christmas will be hard for you. I wish I had words to help with the pain but I don't. Take care of yourself.

  9. I'd like to see that movie, too. I'm with you about the shopping madness. It's why I often "Christmas shop" in the summer!! Don't give up Christmas -- just create new memories.

  10. We don't do a lot of Christmas shopping anymore... just for the grandkids. And we've never shopped on Black Friday... don't care for crowds. That movie does sound good. I too like Judi Dench... and still watch her on old PBS reruns.

  11. I am glad the grandchildren will keep you in the Christmas spirit. If you ignore all the marketing hype it is a wonderful time of year! No Black Friday and No Gray Thursday either -- even if I had lots of money to spend. Just hate the idea of running Thanksgiving and I am like you I hate crowds.

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
