Library

I spent a long time at the library yesterday.  A new book order came in so I was putting on the spine labels, covering them with plastic, and affixing the bar codes so the librarian could get them in the catalog.  I was there from a little after 2 p.m. until 7.

I had walked to the library so I could get some exercise in, but the librarian gave me a ride home because I stayed late and it was quite dark by that time.
Also quite cold.

I put in library hours again today, even though I was home.  I made birds for the flannel board for an upcoming story time.  I made sample craft projects--sandpaper gingerbread boys and a Christmas tree ornament.  The librarian plans story hour with books on a specific topic and then has related music and crafts for the kids to complete.  She pretty much has the year planned.  What did we do before Pinterest??  It is a great source for craft ideas.

I am not sure quite how I got to be the official craft lady of the library, but it is a job I am quite content with doing.

After I made the samples, I made the cut outs so they would be ready for the story time person.

  5. I was a storytime lady at my city's library for 20 years and I would have just treasured a volunteer like you! You are worth your weight in gold. Isn't the library just the best place to work, whether it is for a salary or volunteering?!?!

  6. Well, that looks like fun. And your work will be so appreciated.

  7. Crafts are so much fun. I used to make hand puppets. That's something a librarian might like to use during shows for the kids.

  8. Good for you. Great work and I am assuming it is enjoyable. I definitely need to find a good project for volunteering.

  9. I'd say they picked the right person. I'm the least crafty person I know but appreciate those who are. I love those adorable birds. Keep up the good work.

  10. Commenting on crafts is probably going to get my male gender membership card revoked, I have already been put on notice, but I do like your flannel board birds. The are identifiable to real species rather than just cartoon like birds. Very nice.

    1. It does bother just a tad that they are not to scale.

    2. That happened with me once when we helped my son with a 4 th grade planets model. He had styrofoam balls for the planets of different diameters and we mounted them in fairly large cardboard box. I knew the scale had to be way off for the diameters and the average orbital radii and it bothered me. So I included a chart in the background. Based on a 1.5 inch diameter Earth, (don't hold me to the figures I am going by memory) the sun should have been 88 feet in diameter and Pluto's average orbital radius should have been 6.4 miles. After including the chart I felt a lot better about the hokey scaling.

  11. The library is lucky to have you volunteering there. I thought that your little gingerbread man and the Santa ornament were very cute, but your little birds were my favorites. They would be wonderful throughout the branches of a Christmas tree. The little goldfinch looks just like the ones in my zinnias this past summer.

  12. Thank-you for all the kind words. I do enjoy doing the background prep and then handing it all over for someone else to deal with the pre-schoolers. I have decided that I will definitely look into volunteer opportunities when I return to FLorida for the winter. I will need new routines there. I know that for sure based on the recent trip.

  15. I like all the crafts but the birds are especially cute! I'm imagining them as Christmas tree ornaments. Can I ask where you found the pattern?

The library is lucky to have you volunteering for them!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
