Giving Credit

Yes, I have to give credit where credit is due.

Mike made a commitment to himself and has stuck to it.  He has made several adjustments in diet habits and it really seems to be paying off.  His feet and ankles are no longer swollen and he has lost a bit of weight.  He had a check-up at the cardiologist today.  His blood pressure was 120/76, lowest reading in a medical setting since I have known him.  One medication was swapped for another and three were dropped entirely.

Of course, he did have a number of tests done today--and he has to see his regular physician for a possible bladder infection.  We will have to wait for those results, but today was good news.

Oh, and my jeans fit again after the shock of travel bloat.  It has turned cold, so the jeans came back out along with a couple of sweaters.  Winter jacket, hats, and mittens are put away for the season though.  I'm just firm about that.  So that was good news for me.  I was so happy about the jeans thing that I went out for my walk even though it was raining.  I shouldn't be too happy, though--I know that my doctor will tell me to lose ten pounds when I go for my physical.  She always does.  You'd think she would give up.  Or maybe I should drop the ten pounds?

The daffodils are all gone by now.  The lilacs and lily-of-the-valley are in bloom.  They smell so wonderfully like spring.  The bleeding heart in out as well, and the crab apple trees are in full blossom.  It is such a beautiful time of year...and so fleeting.

  1. Reading about your garden just reminded me that I haven't seen our bleeding hearts! I will have to ask my husband about that. He's our #1 gardener. I did just root some chocolate mint. If you rub the leaves it really does smell like chocolate! I am going to plant that in a half barrel in the back yard. - it was nice to hear about spring in Vermont.

  2. Congrats to your husband, I've been working on my diet too and it's not easy making those kind of changes.

Enjoy your spring, we're just starting to see the trees leaf out here, and I have a few weeds in the front flower bed. Why do they also do so well?

Hope your warm weather comes back soon!

    1. I am still free to nag him about his over use of salt though.

  3. Congrats on losing weight. It is an ongoing battle for me and hubby.

  4. Three cheers for hubbie and his good report. Nag indeed on the salt. I haven't touched a salt shaker in 30 years and I still have too much salt in my diet...it seems to be one of the basic food groups.

One way to put your doctor's order in a better light is to consider that she is telling you to lose only 10 pounds. I wish I only need to lose 10 pounds.

Spring certainly is fleeting. I think this year you could step out and hear the leaves growing on the trees.

  5. Congrats to your husband. We really do have a lot of control over our health. We know what to do, we just don't do it. He did and the results are great. Way to go.

  6. My husband is doing the same thing, and I'm impressed. I love lily of the valley!
    Peace,

  7. What a great day for both of you! Salt is a really hard one for me, too and I know I need to do better. Thank you for sharing our Lily of the Valley. I do miss the spring flowers you get.

  8. That's great to hear such good news on Mike. Good for him! In my opinion 10 pounds is much harder to lost than 50.

  9. Good for your husband. We really are responsible for our own health. And I know how hard it is to lose ten pounds. I have been working on that since January with little success.
I'll try again tomorrow. I just had ice cream this evening. :)

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Life Goes On

There is nothing like a visit from the grand children to remind one that life goes on.  I spent Friday night at my daughter's and then brought the kids back home with me.  I did not get to see so much of them this past summer and it was a birthday gift to my daughter (who just turned 40!) to have a couple of days to herself. She probably spent them in her son's room playing Lego StarWars.  Dane tried to teach me how to play this video game--a hopeless task if ever there was one.  "Concentrate, Grandma!  You have to concentrate!"  I do have a hard time with sustained concentration lately, but in this case I had no clue what it was that needed concentration.  He finally took the controls away from me (thank-you!). It's amazing how long he can amuse himself at my house being out side on a scooter or helping me in the yard, especially if it involves a hose.  Inside, they both sit and draw or craft for hours.  Just before bed, Dane did say, "N...

Eggplant

Mike and I considered ourselves soul mates, but we definitely were not culinary mates.  Mike liked what he liked and disliked what he disliked and he never changed his mind about things like that.  He did not eat mayonnaise.  He did not eat tomato sauce.  He did not eat cooked vegetables except for corn, peas and green beans.  He did not eat onions cooked or otherwise.  He did not eat casseroles ever since they were a combination of things he didn't eat anyway. I did not like mushrooms as a kid and eggplant just made me gag, but my tastes changed,  Foods I found disgusting as a child are now among my favorites--mushrooms, eggplant, avocados, asparagus, eggs, spinach, brussel sprouts, herbs and spices. I will admit that I never developed a taste for liver (nor do I want to). I made this Moussakka a while ago and ate it every day for a week.  I froze half of it but ended up thawing it out right away. It consists of sliced eggplant layered...
