Bike

I picked up my bicycle last Monday.  Here it is--

It’s a Raleigh Detour 3.5 in silver.  I had to wait for a 19” frame to be ordered.  I am so glad I went to a bike shop instead of trying to buy a used bike from Craig’s list.  They were good about listening to my needs—easy to ride, easy to shift, comfortable.  This is a hybrid, something I didn’t even know existed, but it really fits the bill.

I took it for a short ride around the park on the first day.

DSCN2337You can see that Mike is much more interested in taking pictures of scenery than of me on my bike.

I have taken longer rides each day.  I love it!

Now I will need to get a basket.  (I do have a helmet).  I told Mike that I would not get the skin hugging biking clothes, but now I see where ordinary cotton shorts could chafe on a long ride.  Well, anyway it will take me a long time to work up to a really long ride.  It’s very easy to ride, but I do noticed my legs are rubbery when I stop.

P.S.
Today was rainy--the first time since we have been here really.  Red tide has hit the beaches so we are hoping some stormy weather will blow it away.  We went out for lunch and then I spent the afternoon working on a quilt top.

  1. Oh, it looks like heaven. Riding a bicycle in the sunshine, just enjoying the weather....!

  2. Try those exercise pants and see if they work...if not too hot. You look lovey on that bike, by the way and glad you got the hybrid, as that is mine and I love it. Did you get the gel seat to go over the top or do you have enough padding in that area?

  3. You can get two-layer bike shorts (or capri-length) with the first layer body-hugging (but surprisingly comfortable) and padded in all the right places; the top layer a loose one. Check out REI clearance outlet online. Good luck with your biking!

  4. Glad you have a helmet to go with those new wheels! You do need some lycra - bite the bullet...padding is your friend.

  5. Look at you! I am so proud and impressed. Ok, I have to agree, Mike could have gotten a bit better shot of you. He reminds me of my husband. He would have gotten the same kind of shot. (Another thing our men have in common. ;) ) Make sure you wear that helmet.

  7. Good suggestions--gel seat and two layer bike pants. Thanks!

  8. We bought bikes a few years ago but haven't ridden them recently due to various knee replacements and back problems. I wish we'd brought them to Arizona. The terrain is flat here and it would be an easy way to get around.

I don't like the biking shorts either. I wonder if yoga pants might work.

  9. Your bike brings back happy memories. Sadlt bikes are so easily stolen.

  11. How fun! But be sure you don't give up your long walks on the beach - I love hearing about them!

It's TIme

It's been a while since I have posted anything and even my reading your posts is falling by the wayside. I am in Florida now. I have a yard where little attention was spent on landscaping for the past years so I am slowly and (somewhat) methodically addressing that. I also volunteer to work at the pollinator garden and the edible garden I helped install at the UU grounds and I took over the volunteer job of cleaning out the overgrown community garden by my neighborhood mailboxes. The neighbor who was doing that got sick and could no longer attend to it. It's a bigger job than I'd thought at first -- not only overgrown with weeds, but the plants that are wanted there are in life and death competition for each others' spaces. And two walks a day, morning and evening, so Levi can keep up with addiction to canine social media and a daily rousing came of stick or ball midday take up another chunk of my time. I have a weekly meditation group that I co-facilitate, and my own ...

Walking

I have always been a walker. Now that I have a high energy dog there is no excuse for not getting out there. And the weather is not an interfering factor here. Early morning and early evening are our preferred times so even when it gets hot we should be okay. We can get quite a long walk going around the neighborhood, greeting neighbors out working in their yards or walking their own dogs. But the landscape changes quickly just beyond the confines of the housing developments. It could be described as natural Florida or as sites of future housing developments. I do prefer the first option. And I really enjoy being out in natural areas so I often opt to head to a nature setting. I would have liked to put a picture here. Unfortunately my iPhone has made a unilateral decision. It will no longer be sending my photos to my computer. Why? I have no idea. However, we may be walking along happily enough -- me listening to the birds or trying to identify wildflowers and other plants while L...

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!
