In the paper this morning there was an article about a Wisconsin man (Vermont, Wisconsin, oddly enough) who shot his televsion because Bristol Palin has not yet been eliminated from "Dancing with the Stars." Oh, that struck me as incredibly sad...that someone would care enough abut that TV show to engage in violence against an innocent piece of electronics.
And I think it is kind of sad that, if the ads can be believed, that "Dancing with the Stars" is America's most watched program. Surely, surely, this nation could do better than that.
Well, it is for certain that we can produce worse shows--much worse. Anything that involves wife swapping, for instance. Where is the moral outrage on that one? Or anything involving "real" housewives. Especially if those housewives are from New Jersey. Come to think of it, it really seems like a bad idea to have any kind of program that features the denizens of New Jersey at all. Those hair dressers? Really?
Have to admire the creativity, though. Dancing competitions are popular. Losing weight competitions are popular. Why not combine the two? Why not?--because then you get "Dance Your Ass Off."
To be honest, I have to admit I haven't even seen some of these shows, and those I have seen did not get much of my time. (The remote control clicker was kind of a great invention.) I can form an opinion pretty quickly and I am not going to apologize for that.
I did not catch Sarah Palin and her homage to her home state. Nor will I. I have a V-chip activated on the Fox network.

ReplyDeleteI did see the first episode of Palin's Alaska because I wanted to give her a fair chance and I wanted to see Alaska. It was a disappointment. Her voice is annoying, she kept doing things like a tourist would...one would think she never stepped outside her house in the state because she seemed to be seeing and doing everything for the first time, and everyone else in the family says very little...so you have to listen to her!

There really is, or at least was, a show called Dance Your Ass Off. I didn't make that up.
ReplyDeleteI do watch Dancing with the Stars. I really enjoy watching ballroom dancing (when it is done right) and it is truly an art form when done well and with precision. But my issue is with ABC and the people they are choosing to have on the show as "stars." In my opinion, Bristol Palin does not fit into that mold and should never have been asked to compete.
ReplyDeleteThere were some very good, very graceful, very nice to look at dancers on that show this season, who were voted off because the tea party-ers were voting en masse for the Palin girl - despite the fact that every other contestant was a better dancer from the get-go.
And yes, there are other programs on TV that might be better to turn our attention to. I watch my share of NatGeo, Discovery, History and TLC. Dancing with the Stars is not shallow, it is pure entertainment and I will take issue with people who say it isn't worth watching. If they feel that way, they should turn the channel - and let me enjoy the beautiful dancers, costumes and judging.
I am so glad to discover I'm not the only one who has never watched 'American Idol,' or 'Dancing...stars' and that ilk with one caveat - I DO watch the housewives (but Atlanta, those girls are too over the top). Much to Excy's chagrin. They're like watching what not to do or aspire to -- a train wreck I can't seem to turn away from...In fact i posted about them once...good post.
