I used to like to watch HGTV house hunting shows and make-overs, but I lost interest when people stopped considering anything that did not have stainless steel appliances and marble counter tops. Seemed so shallow.

When I bought my condo, I was more interested in the location. The real estate agent was thrilled about the fact that all the appliances were brand new, saying she was an appliance snob. The all stainless steel kitchen and the washing machine with an he agitator-free model was not a priority for me, but I figured they would at least last.

Frankly, now I wish they would all die. What the hey is the big whoop with stainless steel appliances? All that wiping fingerprints, water drops -- it doesn't end. A glass top electric stove? After being used to a gas stove? NO. Just no.

And let's not even get started on the agitation free washing machine. "Place clothing carefully in the tub" is the only direction. No matter how many different variations of "carefully" I have tried -- it's a melee. Long sleeved tees twisted around the legs of pajama pants. You wouldn't believe what can happen to bed sheets. And the length of a cycle? The time spent untangling?

I never thought of myself as a person resistant  to change but these things do not strike me as big improvements. So there you go. You can call me shallow, persnickety, and a reverse appliance snob.

P.S. I am grateful to have a home with modern conveniences. Really. Most of the time.

  1. I'm with you on the stainless steel appliances. I have a tea kettle that requires enough wiping to keep the finger prints off, I don't a whole set of appliances too.

AND that damned glass top stove that came with this house is a nuisance. I've not been able to get the marks and scratches off from the previous owner and have added some myself. I don't know what the trick is, even having bought special cleanser and scraper kit. I'll probably replace it soon, and I may just go back to the burners...though that won't help with resale. Sigh....

    Take care and stay well.

P.S. you apparently touched a nerve, I didn't mean to rant!

  2. So far I haven't heard anything good about the agitation free washers. Your account convinces me. I just had my 20 year old one easily repaired. People keep trying to fix what isn't broken--like Blogger.

  3. Oh how this made me smile. I am not alone and that feels great. I HATE my stainless steel appliances. I am too anal retentive to have them. I am forever wiping them down. I swear when my husband opens the dishwasher he puts his fingers on the entire front. ThankfullyI do not have a washer like that but I also don't get the need for it. Is it supposed to make your clothes last longer? As for house hunters. That annoys me too Olga. First of all buy your marble, quartz, granite whatever after you buy the house. Why put that in your 30 yr mortgage? It will be far cheaper that way too. I can watch the first 5 minutes and if the couple annoys me I can't watch it. Like when they say they hate the color. OMG. There are stores where you can buy things to change that! They make me want to slap them. I'm horrible I know.

  4. There is a trade off for beauty in appliances. I like easy to clean and low maintenance, but no one decorates for that. I also find my sheets seem to be in a tangled embrace at the end of each cycle.

  5. I'm with you. I had to look hard to find replacement white kitchen appliances. My clothes washer is also old fashioned. And I really don't want those cold, hard stone counter tops. I still have Formica, and if you drop a sturdy glass, it doesn't shatter.

  6. Maebene, rants just have to get out once in a while.
Patti, hang on to that older model.
Margaret, It must be hard to get paint stores as sponsors for some of those shows. I stopped watching when I saw a house hunter who still lived with his mother and no money saved pooh-pooh all the houses because they didn't look like a magazine layout. Get real!
Tabor, Yeah sheets can be out and out pornographic coming out of those machines.
Linda. I shopped for a fridge with no ice maker in FL and you's think I had too heads. I was worried about mold since I am not there all the time.

  7. Washers do not use enough water these days and with Buddy’s skin condition it is not fun. Gas is great until a family member gets dementia. Thank god gas has a smell and my nose is super keen for I have had several events and the detector failed to go off before I did.. most new appliances are not built to last these days.
But all is made to look shiny..

  8. I’m not keen on stainless steel appliances either. I want no part of replacing my old-fashioned tile countertop with granite or marble in kitchen or bathrooms. Since its just me, though I always wait until I have a full load, i don't mind my energy efficient clothes washer though don't like front loading. I put clothes all tangled together directly into dryer and it sorts and separates them so not a problem.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
