FAIR TIME

The Champlain Valley Fair means the end of summer in our area of Vermont.
I took my grand kids last year and my grandson has been talking about it with the anticipation most kids might save for Santa Claus for the past year.

It rolled around again and I was chump enough to agree to take them once again. The age difference between my two grandchildren sometimes makes an outing a challenge.  Also Kristen is entering that stage of wanting distance between herself and her grandmother--or adults generally.  I told her she could invite a friend, leaving me free to concentrate on entertaining Dane.  Or leaving Dane free to entertain me.

We negotiated.  I regular check-in time and spot with the girls, not games that would result in having to drag around prizes until we were leaving, and he and I would take turns picking the activities and rides.  That way we got to see the animals and the agricultural exhibits, ride the ferris wheel, and actually make it to the check-ins.  That way Dane also got me onto to some rides that I thought I was done with my own children no longer needed my constant attention at the fair.

Fair food.

And now, empty pockets.

  2. Nice we both had a color filled exciting days of photos for our blogs. I have 3 more days posts set up for for everyone's viewing. I like your pumpkins they remind me that we are getting close to fall.

  4. Fairs are the perfect way to end a summer for kids. You worked out a great compromise. Some of those rides looked pretty scary though.

    1. I wore very comfortable shoes. But I am lucky in the foot department--no major pains.

  7. Smart idea on having your granddaughter bring a friend. I can't imagine trying the rides any longer, probably have to leave the place on a gurney and sign up for physical therapy. It looked like a great day.

  8. You're such a good grandma! I never really enjoyed fairs, but I know I attended several with my children. Now, I just watch pictures of them (or live vicariously through blogs like yours!) My grandies are too young for those big rides, anyway. Glad you had a good time -- you did, didn't you?

  9. Wow. You really went on those rides? I stand in awe of your bravery.
Fair food is reason enough for me to want to get to fairs, although I've missed all of them this summer!

  11. I haven't been to the fair in over 10 years. Lol. Glad you all had a good time.

  12. The biggest favor I did for my grandchildren was not to take their parents to carnivals or fairs. This way my children felt slighted and vowed to take their children to everything.

  13. A,yes, those awful rides. Kids love them and I hate them. I cannot go on the strong ones, because I get sore at the end of the day. So you have shown me what I get to look forward to as my little ones grow.

  14. Good for you! You are right, they get to that age.

  15. Wow, you are a brave woman Olga! Not only for taking the children to the fair, but venturing onto the rides as well.

I haven't been to the fair since my children were old enough to no longer want to attend. But I certainly remember the feeling of having empty pockets at the end.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
