Off for a Visit

I am packed and ready to go visit my friend Diane.  She has a home on a small pond in southern New Hampshire.  We arranged this visit when Diane was visiting me in Florida and I have been looking forward to it . . . Until I had Lyme disease.

I am still looking forward to seeing my friend of course.  But she lives in the woods and we have always hiked there.  Now I have images of ticks lurking on all vegetation.

We shall see.  Will neuroticism take over and strand me in the cabin for the week?  Will I be braver than that?  Will any lingering effects (Although I feel fine now.) prevent me from keeping up with my most energetic friend?

  1. My husband went through this after his bout with Lyme. He does carry spray with him, rubber bands to tie around his pant legs and all kinds of other things. Be safe but try to have fun Olga. And when you come back inside, check your clothing, seams, your body and then have a cocktail or two because you are safe!! Enjoy.

  2. I would say take all of the precautions necessary and have a good hike. When you come back to the cabin you and your friend can check each other for ticks like the baboons at the zoo. :)

  3. I am so glad you are doing so much better but can understand your caution. Use Margaret's and Valley Angel's cautions then just to be sure, take a full body shower after trips to the woods. Hope you can enjoy and not feel the constant crawlies. Have fun.

  4. Go with what feels right and with God's Grace. I have a friend that we have long visits together and it is so much fun. We had our first apartment together when we were young and we still enjoy laying out on the sofas and having a good talk.

  5. After coming home from a morning of wild blackberry picking many years ago I found a bevy of seed ticks heading toward the stars. I had worn long sleeves and jeans, and probably repellent for chiggars. Never thought about ticks then, Tying off my jeans around my ankles would have been a wise precaution. Check yourself over carefully afterward. Expect your friend will be understanding given your experience.

  6. I don't blame you at all - I would have serious second thoughts about going out in those woods after what you have been through. Have a wonderful trip!

  7. I am terribly allergic to Avon Skin so Soft, but most people around here use it for tick and mosquito prevention. At least is doesn't smell as bad as most bug sprays.

  8. It sounds like a lot of people have experience with Lyme (I've had it 3 times). So as you know...

    DEET
Tuck your pants legs into your socks
    Wear a hat
Check for ticks when you get home
    Shower right away
Throw your clothes in the wash

And then decide ... is it worth it?

  10. It sounds like you have good advice. I also think your very good friend will more than understand if she needs to lower her energy level a teeny bit to yours. have fun. Youve been counting on it.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
