Night Life

I went out with friends on Saturday night to hear a band play at a bar in Sarasota. It has been a long long time since I did something like that.  The band was great, and, as I remembered from my younger days, even better during the second set. (Still unclear as to whether that is due to the band's or the audience's advancing lubrication.)

What was different for me was the number of cell phones in evidence.  I told you it had been a long time since I have been to a bar to see a band.) People were snapping pictures of the band with their phones and that was kind of cool.  The woman sitting at the table next to me was snapping selfies, lots of them.  I could see her posing this way and that and snapping away.  Good grief, we have become self-absorbed. (I am in danger of sounding like my father!)

I looked around to find that there were plenty of people swiping and texting away on there phone, eyes on the screens -- not the band, not the people they were with.  It took a lot of the fun out of people watching. (Like watching sheep eating grass.)

  1. The cell phone is an addiction. Young folks don't seem to mind. I can be guilty of it a little, but don't do the selfie thing or letting everyone know where you are while ignoring those who are there with you.

  2. I can be guilty of over attending to my cell phone, but not when I'm in a social situation. What's the point of going out with friends if you don't pay any attention to them.

  3. Aww, such a waste. People are letting life slip by. I am always stunned when they show the crowd at a ball game and few are watching anything but their phones. Why even go?

  4. You have to wonder why people go out places if they spend most of the time with their cellphones doing none-essential stuff. But I'm glad you enjoyed the evening.

  5. Well at least you had a nice evening, listening to good music and people watching. I don't understand the need to keep one's cell phone at the ready all the time. Though I have a tendency not to look at it as often as I should...perhaps I need to find a balance.

As for selfies, that's an art I never hope to master.

  6. Such a shame that they missed out on living because they were attached to a phone/object. I hope you had a wonderful time though. :-)

  7. I hear you, and I couldn't agree more. Why bother to even go out if your main entertainment is the phone?

  8. I sang in a traveling band in my younger day and the supper club crowd was usually pretty good about listening. If not listening then talking amongst themselves. Don't know how I would feel today if my efforts were totally missed because of a cell phone...lol

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
