Paradise?

Venice was host to a soaking rain and extreme wind yesterday morning.  A roof was ripped off a shopping center building on Route 41 in what they called "thunderstorm wind,"  wind of considerable force moving in a straight line.  It only lasted seconds but the damage was done.

It happened here in the park four years ago to friends who live here.  Their sun room imploded and the roof landed on a car down the street.  Again, only seconds in length but the damage was done.

This morning the puddles have dried up and dew is glistening in bright sunshine.

The big news in Venice is that the library, built in the mid 1960's, will be torn down.  They have been unable to pinpoint the source of moisture causing mold throughout the building.  They have given up trying and will knock the whole thing down.

Building are so expendable around here.  Most of us snow birds come to Florida for the weather, to escape the raw cold and snow of winter, but in its own way the climate here can be most inhospitable.

It used to be a common car bumper sticker--Venice is Paradise.

Still, like anyplace, when it is beautiful, it is beautiful.

  1. Pretty photo. Let's hope there are no hurricanes this year.

  2. "... only seconds in length, but the damage was done." How true, Olga. Our son, who lives only blocks from where the tornado took out the houses in Rowlett, drove us around the area yesterday. It's unbelievable what damage a few seconds can cause. Let's pray that 2016 is less volatile.

  4. If any place was truly paradise, everyone would want to live there. I guess it's a good thing there is no perfect place.

  5. I can see leaving Vermont's extreme cold but it seems to me Florida is the opposite extreme. Perhaps somewhere between the two?

  6. Florida holds a certain beauty you only understand when you live there. The heat, humidity and mosquitoes can be enough to keep you away but once you find its uniqueness it really grows on you.

  7. I wondered how you had fared when I heard the weather report. Glad you dodged the bullet. My brother is down that way now and they missed it all by being near the Everglades for the week.
    Stay safe and dry.

  9. Glad to hear that you suffered no ill from the storm. Sorry to hear about the library. Will a new library be built?

  10. Would that wind have been called a micro burst? I know those cause a lot of damage in a very brief time.

  11. We get those wind shears here sometimes. They can knock down great swaths of ancient lodgepole pines in a matter of seconds. The thought of a beach right now does seem a little like Paradise!

  12. The weather lately really is scary. Being in southern California with all the predictions of severe El Ninos has me really concerned. We need rain, we do not need a deluge. Be safe.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
