Sheets

It is no secret that I have a bit of a thing about bed sheets.

When Mike and I rented places for the winter in Venice, Florida, I would usually last about 90 minutes before I was refolding all the sheets in the rental linen closets.  I would tell myself upon arrival that this was a compulsive behavior that I should conquer.  I would tell myself I would just fold sheets properly as I changed and washed them.  I would tell myself there were far better things to do with my time.  It never worked.   I always broke down and refolded the sheets and pillow cases.

There's an advantage to having my own place...I know the sheets will be fine upon my Florida arrival.

But I don't call myself obsessive.

Alphabetizing books, CDs, spices--that's only common sense. The sheet thing is just a kind of tic.

I am thinking about this now because I was helping my friend Ginnie with laundry last week.  Now, Ginnie is a perfectionist about many things...folding fitted sheets apparently is not one of those things though.

Gin, I hope I didn't offend you by grabbing that pathetic, rolled up sheet out of your hands.  I couldn't help myself.

And here is a video of how it is done:

  4. Well, I watched the video just to be sure. I was. I do it right! Not the least bit compulsive, not me.

  5. I have no idea how to fold a sheet or where my wife even stores them. However having fooled around with sheets when I was doing laundry for my mother, I must say I was impressed with the video and how neat the folded sheet ended up. The methodology appeals to my memories of pretending to be an engineer.

That said, I also have a bit of a sadistic love for clutter and mess being brought up by a mother who was a combination of the woman in the video and Stalin. Also having lived through basic training in the military, I have a decided dislike for shined shoes, cut hair, starch and creases, hospital corners, and blankets tight enough to flip a quarter.

I am a pathological slob, but one often impressed by the methods of the neat and tidy.

  6. Oh boy, you've got it bad! I limit my ocd to making sure my dollar bills are all facing the same way. After that I follow the advice on B's pillow about cleaning -- I sweep the room with a glance.

  7. You can come visit me in Tucson and teach me how to fold fitted sheets.

I'm compulsive about keeping track of every cent we spend. On Quicken. For the last 15 years. Otherwise, not so much!

  8. Okay...you can straighten out my check book in return!

  9. Aren't you fun?! I just reorganized my linens cupboard. It's a good feeling!

  10. Yup. I've been doing it that way since I saw Martha Stewart do it.

  11. I had no idea it was that easy. I just wash the sheets and put them back on the bed. When the set gets old or pilled I buy another set and do that same.

However, I could have used that video earlier this morning when I was folding my daughter's laundry. Next time!

    Thanks for sharing.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
