The Problem with Downsizing

The problem with downsizing, clearing out, minimizing, and simplifying--it just gives me more room to start collecting stuff again.

Perhaps I am missing something vital to the point of life simplified.

But I find it so hard to resist small pitchers and useful little containers of any sort.
I bought this blue table at a yard sale.  Yes, Barb, blue is a favorite color.
I don't really remember where I found this plate but it perks up an otherwise useless corner of the kitchen counter.
And who doesn't eed an angel or two watching over?

  1. Yes it is really hard to keep from filling the spot you just cleared. One the other hand if you are a frugal or thrifting shopper, the price you pay is less than someone else pays to go to the movie or out to dinner. You save a dollar here, to spend a dollar there.

  2. I'm in the same situation -- supposed to be getting rid of things, but adding more!

  3. Lovely containers! It's especially difficult to pare down when some of the pretty stuff (or not-so-pretty) came from someone special. Good luck!

  4. I like to collect art. And I keep changing the framed family photos on my mantle.
    Your collectibles are lovely.

  5. I have given up collecting and must go through all of my non-sentimental stuff and get ride of it. All of your things do not look cluttered. They look really lovely, so don't worry until stuff starts falling off the shelf.

  6. I would love to downsize but my husband is a collector and his face tightens up when I suggest such a thing.Maybe that's why I love our Tucson park model - we just bought it last year, we haven't had much time to collect, and I have hope it will remain simple.

  7. Getting rid of stuff leaves room for new stuff without adding to the clutter. Enjoy!

  8. Oh, I love how you are cluttering up your Florida house!

  9. Lovely items, the table is very pretty and very functional. All the colors are so pretty and bright!

I've been taking items to the garage for a sale this spring but I understand the need to collect. With me it's mainly seasonal decorations though I've really cut back. I think I'm down to 6 or 8 large rubbermaid totes...that's not too much is it?

  10. Those little items really do brighten up your kitchen. I love throwing out old things -- a good excuse to buy new things although new doesn't have to actually be new! Just new to me. Love the tablecloth -- actually I love collecting table clothes!

  11. Sadly I can relate. I recently told an artist friend of mine that I loved her painting but that I didn't have a single open space of wall to put it. How did that happen??

  12. I think an empty table top is kind of sad. Better to fill it up with plates and pitchers and ... angels.

  13. I understand what you are saying. I'm getting better at not buying these little things because I just don't have any more places to put them. On the other hand, I really love that plate, and the corner would look blah without it. And that blue table, well, it is a find for sure. Love it!

  14. I'm glad that you're adding things while I'm still subtracting! PS I'm psychic!

  15. I like the pitchers in the window, and that plate in the corner is really cool.

But what I really love is the view out your window with no damned snow.

  16. I like that colorful plate. It's so cheerful! I'm trying to downsize our things too, but it's awfully hard. Really, really hard.

  17. You present an excellent argument for not throwing out beloved stuff in the first place.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
