No Time for Books

I have always liked to read.  I can get lost in a good book.

But lately I have no time to read because of...books.

I am putting extra time in at the library.  The librarian knows I will eventually fly like the snowbird I am off to Florida.  She's asked me to help her get caught up on a few projects that have been sitting on hold.  I have been dealing with donations that go right onto the "for sale" shelves, but the donations that have been set aside for replacing damaged books already in the collection or to add to the collection have been piling up.  The library board finally said no more donations for the time being, but it is being a bear of a job getting out from under this task.

So I handle many books on a daily basis and I have nightmares about books every night for a while, but I have not time to actually read a book!

Another reason for taking off for my winter retreat.

Reading a book written by a local author in more care free times.

  1. I must have my reading time on a daily basis. Even when I worked full time, I had to fit in some time for a book. Now that I have the time, I drive our librarians crazy, finding books for me. Did I tell you that I'm loving Chris Bohjalian's works? He's a Vermonter!!

  2. I understand the overkill with too many books.. I worked in Dairy Queen in high school and it took 20 years before I could eat ice cream again. Hope it doesn't take you long to get back enjoying books again.

    1. I don't think it will take that long, but it does all push me towards a Kindle!

  3. Books, books everywhere and not a page to read.

Your curse for the abandonment of the library for Florida will be to hang the floor reference dictionary from you neck, or at least pilloried to the card catalog.

    Your volunteering is exemplary.

    1. Ha! We don't have either of those things in our library. More like I will be surrounded by the complete Meadows' Fairy series.

  4. I often think that a part time job in the local library would be a perfect retirement job for me (assuming I get to retire), but then I do wonder if it would ruin my Book Experience. I do love me my reading! ...and I much prefer Real Books rather than e-books.

    1. Our library has one part time librarian. Look for a library with more staff and division of labor and you should be quite happy.

  5. I bet that library really misses you while you are gone but I certainly understand your desire to go where the sun shines! I agree, it is wonderful that you volunteer!

    1. There are so many volunteers at the libraries in Florida (surplus of retired folks!) that I had to look elsewhere for volunteer opportunities down there.

  6. That is ironic - no time to read because of books!
I often wonder how my life got so busy that I find it hard to find time to read. Now I am studying travel guides to prepare for a trip in October. It's reading, but it's also work. Not the same as spending time with my Kindle.

  7. Olga, I love seeing those photos of you. You are beautiful. I haven't read a paper book in ages. I now read everything on my Paper White. How wonderful of you to help out!

  8. For some reason there is too much guilt for me to sit and read a book so I listen to audio books while I work. Ron used to say, "Just sit down and rest. You don't have to be doing something all the time." But I do.

    1. I have heard others say they feel guilty when they sit down to read any time but just before bed. I never really understood that but listening to audio books seems like a good solution.

    1. Ha! I should be honest and admit that time on the computer is also a factor. I have tried to limit computer time but it always seems to creep back up.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
