New Shoes

My running shoes are past their prime.  Not that I run, but I do an exercise walk and running shoes are what I find most comfortable for that.

In the spirit of full disclosure--or perhaps of TMI--I have been known to walk five miles in flip-flop sandals.  I know that is wrong.  Time to treat myself better.

Anyway, I need new running/walking shoes so I went online to do some research.  Isn't technology so so grand?

I learned something to pass along.  It is from Fleet Feet and is really about socks:

  • At rest, the average foot releases 1 cup of sweat each day.
  • On a 5 mile run, your feet produce enough sweat to fill an 8 ounce glass.
  • 55% of foot perspiration evaporates through the shoes upper. The other 45% is absorbed in the sock and footbed of your shoe!
  • Two trillion bacteria live on your feet (that’s 12% of all bacteria on the human body).

Yeah, talk about Too Much Information!

I did get new running shoes.  They are Asics gel nimbus and they were more expensive than I would normally buy, but WOW! are they ever comfortable.

I braved the threatening sky and went for my walk.

Having read this on Barb's Live and Learn--temperatures dipping near freezing--I adjusted my angst over signs of the approaching fall.

Amazing what new shoes and a little perspective can do for a body and soul.

  1. Alas, I would like to have a new body to put in my old shoes. Interesting factoids on the foot.

    Hope your walk was good.

  2. Well, thanks for the link, Olga - I'm glad that you feel sorrier for me than for yourself! I expect you to float-walk on those gels. My feet certainly don't sweat that much - do they?

  3. I guess that info about sweat does not apply to my feet, because I go barefoot most of the time. When outside, I wear flip flops.

  5. Great info and I am going to check out those shoes. I bought a pair of Sketchers with the Memory foam inserts and loved them in the beginning but because very unhappy with them. That foot sweat you mentioned all gets absorbed by the memory foam and they got all bunched up and uncomfortable very quickly.

  6. New shoes do have a direct effect on our attitudes. Especially if they are comfortable. Who knew feet were so sweaty. What happens when people wear leather shoes? Where does that cup of goo all go?

  7. Not sure I am ready for fall yet ... maybe I need to buy some new shoes for a new perspective. lol

  8. I had no idea that feet sweat that much. A cup of sweat...ewww!

The older I get the more important comfortable shoes are to me. No flip flops except for putzing around the house, and my heels for work are now less than 2 inches.

Enjoy your walks in you new shoes!

  9. They look nice. But for me, shoes don't begin to get comfortable until I've worn them for at least six months.

  10. Olga, it is so important to have a good understanding!!!

  11. The podiatrists here in Hawaii are always warning us not to walk around too much in flip flops (we call it slippers). Seriously? 1 cup of sweat from my feet? No wonder I'm thirsty. I do walk around quite a bit with my FitFlops which I love. But for more serious walking (more than 2 blocks) I use gym shoes. I love Asics! I agree that they are very comfortable!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
