Florida Again

The grand kids had their first airplane experience.  My grandson was excited that he got to go one two different planes in one day--a transfer at JFK.  The flight was without a hitch and we arrived in Venice by noon.

My granddaughter went immediately to bed after we had lunch.  My grandson was in the pool and later we went to the beach at Sharky's and found shells then to the South Jetty to watch dolphins.  We checked on granddaughter a couple of times to make sure that she was still breathing.  Her approach to getting up for 4:30 a.m. was to stay awake all night so I understand her need to catch up on sleep.

Grandson has strict adherence to bedtime--a marvelous side benefit to his mathematical/logical order mind.

Today, we went to Nokomis Beach.  The water is about body temperature.  It was pretty choppy today, so we got bashed around in the waves.  Fun!  After supper--they wanted to go in the pool.  We will all be waterlogged at the end of this adventure.  There was no way I could interest them in building a sand castle.

Tomorrow we plan to go to the aquarium with a stop on the way back at Siesta Key.  It is a very popular beach, on the America's Top Ten kind of thing.  It is not my favorite--for one thing way too crowded, but they will be able to say that they went there.

He had a bandaid on his nose because of a tiny little scratch.  No he has a white bandaid-shaped patch on his face.

There have been a few near melt-downs from over tiredness and a few sibling squabbles.  I bought myself a bottle of wine and have extended my own bedtime so I can relax and enjoy a sip.  I hope they are having fun.

  1. Olga, they may not tell you they are having fun, but they most likely are! How wonderful to be able to share your winter house with your grands for vacation time.

  4. Travel is stressful for everyone and it brings out the best and the worst, but the memories are precious. I admire your stamina! Watch the tides during this storm even though you are on the other side.

  6. Looks like you aren't getting any of that tropical storm off the east side of the state. Enjoy the kids and keep that quiet tine as a regular wind down time.
I remember Siesta Beach when it wasn't so crowded in the late 50's. Great times.

  11. What a fun time with your grandkids! I remember my first plane ride at the age of 21 -- to the island of Maui. I was so thrilled.

  12. On vacation with the Grands - what could be better (well, bedtime is always good, too). Sounds like you're having lots of watery fun. My husband's family lives near Siesta Beach - white sands. I seem to remember a good ice cream place, too.

  13. Well it looks like everyone and especially grandma are having a great time. No sand castles! Well maybe that's not cool any more. Oh well go with the flow and keep a cool bottle of wine handy in the fridge to soften those squabbles.

  14. I'm sure they are having fun. It is great that you are doing this for and with them. If, just in case, they really hate it and don't want to ever go again, call me, I'll go. I won't fight. I'll help out. And, I will even buy my own wine to share with you. ;)

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
