Appliance Angst

My clothes dryer has had a tantrum, blew a fuse, and refuses to work.  Since it is ten years old and reaching its date of planned obsolescence, I may as well go ahead and purchase a new one.  The problem is: will the clothes washer be far behind?

Then, of course, it is bound to happen that the refrigerator and dish washer will join in the plod to self-destruction.  Household appliances are such sheep.  BAH!

(with apologies to my sheep-loving friends)

  1. LOL. Glad that you keep your sense of humor even though your pocket book is running empty! I was told by my last appliance repairman that appliances are now built to last 5-6 years.

  2. Electric dryers are not worth fixing. We discovered that after one part broke and was repaired, other parts, one after another, broke, too. We ended up paying more to fix that dryer than we would have buying a brand new one. Ugh!

  3. Yikes, you are so right about them being a bunch of sheep. They just can't seem to go to the junk yard alone. Good luck and hope the washer isn't listening.

  4. Better an appliance or two than any health issues. The docs can make appliances seem like a bargain, and while appliances may hurt your wallet, they generally incur no pain.

  5. Replacement of appliances seems to come in threes. So pick three!

  6. I hope your dryer is the black sheep of appliances and that the rest of them don't want to follow.

  7. Oh dear! I'm so sorry. The problem truly is the dryer goes first and you start to wonder if the washer will go so should you replace one or both so they match. That's always our quandary and frustration. Right now we have a mismatched washer and dryer. Ah welll. I'll keep my fingers crossed for an excellent appliance sale in your area.

  10. The very first dryer my mom had lasted nearly 30 years before giving up the ghost. I don't think I've ever had a dryer last more than 10 years or so. I hope your next dryer lasts a little longer.
And hopefully the other appliances weren't listening! Good luck!

  11. I feel your pain. I've had to buy two sets of washers and dryers in just the last three years. We bought new ones for our home before we realized we'd put the house up and move. The buyers wanted the new appliances. I hated to give in and hand them over since they were so new, but to be honest must say I hated the front loader washer, so in someways was glad to get rid of it. When we move, we had to buy new ones again. I bought a top loader this time. Don't like it any better. These new HE washers are for the birds. (apologies to bird lovers.) Good luck on making your new purchase. Sorry about that. They just don't make things like they used to make them.

    1. I mostly hang my clothes on a rack to dry. I use the dryer for sheets and towels. My thought is to get the simplest, least fancy feature model I can find.

  12. Oh I know, its Murphy's Law....the ones you'd like a good reason to replace just keep going like the energy bunny. And the favorite appliances just don't keep on ticking!!!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
