Lily of the Valley

Convallaria majalis

The Lily of the Valley are in bloom right beneath my bedroom window.  I always have this dilemma: close the window to keep out the pollen and dust or leave it open so I can enjoy the fragrance.

If you Google this flower, you will learn of its "medicinal" uses.  I don't advise anyone play doctor with this pretty little plant.  All parts are poisonous so any medicinal value would have to come with fine print warnings or a rapidly stated list of potential side-effects, including death.  Oh...so it is just like any other modern day medical drug advertised these days!

  1. I have always loved lily of the valley, but I haven't been successful growing it. Enjoy yours while they last.

  2. Yes, some of those advertisements from the medical/pharmaceutical industrial complex make having typical maladies sound like a walk in the park compared to the ill effects from the drugs. But I alway notice that sun shines and the people in the ads are smiling and happily consumed in some sort of relaxed domestic activity.

  4. So true. It is just like our modern drugs. I love these flowers. I just transplanted some from my Mom's house to my house. We'll see how they do. I hope the animals don't eat them and get sick. If those bunnies that destroy all my other flowers end up dead, I guess you can blame my lily of the valley. Truthfully, I think the bunnies and other animals are smarter than humans, they will not eat the flowers.

  5. It is too bad that something so beautiful could be so poisonous. Who knew?

  6. I don't think I have ever had the pleasure. I usually take a pill and open the windows.
I think the most disgusting side effect for a medicine i ever heard was that it could produce oily gas. Sheesh.

  9. I love your smart, clever observation. But if the plant is poisonous, maybe that's the problem with the pollen?

  10. A lovely flower, but I always felt it didn't bottle well (re soaps and perfume sprays). When we were young that fragrance and Coty L'Aimant were all the rage.

  13. Ahhh... I love lilies of the valley. I had a bed of them at our home in Illinois, but they spread into the lawn like wildfire. Granted they were fragrant wildfire. I loved it when my first graders would bring them in for me. Ahhhh.... the memories.

  14. I really miss lily of the valley. They are so beautiful and they really do remind me of my childhood. As for today's medicines -- I listen to some of the commercials and the 8 mile list of possible side effects and I wonder how anyone could be brave enough to take them!

  15. Oh, yes! Me, too. I didn't remember I had them. Another bonus to old age!

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
