Movie

Saturday afternoon was stretching out in a rather directionless fashion so I decided to take in a 4:00 movie at the local theater.  Apparently, many others had the same notion as the line, when I got to the theater fairly early, was extremely long.  I bought a ticket for August: Osage County.

I 'll admit that I did not know too much about it, but I figured with Meryl Streep, I couldn't go wrong.  It is not an upbeat, feel-good kind of movie by any means.  That was okay with me.  I did appreciate the story and Meryl Streep is beyond brilliant.  To watch her acting is to watch art being made.

There was quite a bit of grumbling about the trailers having given people to believe it was a comedy.  Themes of abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, infidelity, suicide, incest--hard to make a comedy out of that stuff.

I did hear a few remarks along the lines of, "Well, my life doesn't seem so bad now!"

  1. I haven't watched a movie in a theater since I went to see Jurassic Park and a little girl plunked herself right next to me and proceeded to eat cellophane wrapped candies through the whole film. You could hear her unwrapping those candies all over the theater. She couldn't possibly have heard the dialogue with all that crackling, chewing and slurping.

    1. The sounds of other people eating can be so annoying.

  2. I know what to expect, and I really want to see Meryl and Julia go at it. I think we'll see it next weekend.

  3. Much as I love Meryl and Julie, I'm going to take a pass on this one. I'm looking for happy things to see right now. I haven't seen a movie in ages though.

  4. My son has seen the movie and left feeling very depressed because it represents those from Oklahoma in a very bad light and totally dysfunctional. My siblings have all seen the move and agreed that their lives look great compared to those in the movie. I am planning to skip this one, even when it comes on TV, even with Meryl in it.

  5. Oh, I don't watch movies as a general rule, because I lack the patience. However, I do like Woody Allen's satirical movies and plan to watch Blue Jasmine on Netflix.

  6. My sister hated it and I think it was the dark theme of dysfunction after the trailer implied it was a comedy. Sometimes it is hard to readjust our expectations. Think I will pass.

  7. I too like Meryl Streep and had thought about going to see this movie, but agree that I don't want to see anything depressing right now... so I too may skip it for the time being.

  8. Yeah, it does sound depressing. But "Ordinary People" was depressing, and I thought it was one of the best movies of all time. I guess we like depressing stuff more when we're younger. Meanwhile, I've seen "Her" and "American Hustle" while on vacation. Both were okay; but not as good as the hype would have us believe. (That's the trouble with the hype ... turns a perfectly good movie into a disappointment.)

  9. I hate paying the price of a ticket at the theatre so I'll probably wait for it to hit the television screen. We went a couple of weeks, a friend and I and her son, and with treats we spent over $60, yikes!

But it looks like an interesting story from what I've seen so I'll look for it at some point...maybe in the cheap theatre.

  10. When I went to see Philomena, we bought bottled water--$4.00 per bottle! Gasp!

  11. Hmmm. Not sure if I will see the movie or not. I do love Meryl though, so who knows what I will decide. She truly is brilliant.

  12. Well - you don't seem to have been pulled down by it. Hope you're all healed.

  13. We don't go to the movies anymore either -- just can't justify the expense. But I will certainly add this to the Netflix queue. I love Meryl Streep.

Updates

On September 29, I had the closing on my condo. Everything that was not going to the buyers was out and packed in the ABF moving truck which had by the been taken over to the storage units. Don thought it would take him until Wednesday to finish packing the truck with the help of his son. It took him until late Thursday with Chris' help and mine. Kevin was supposed to help load as well but he was in a mountain bike accident and wrecked his shoulder the week before. That added driving him to doctor appointments to my to do list and dong some shopping for him plus jobs around the house that might need two functioning upper limbs.  We stayed with Kevin on Friday night after the closing and then had a suite in an extended stay place for the coming week. This was the worst possible time to have to get a room because the prices balloon during leaf peeping season if you can even find a room at all. But it was close to the storage units where we were working and it was dog friendly. We ju

Wedding

Don and I drove to South Carolina to attend the wedding of my step-grandson, Will. Will Will and Katie The wedding took place on Dataw Island, a beautiful outdoor ceremony followed by a reception in the country club. We stayed in a tiny cottage in the historic center of Beaufort, rented from Vrbo. Since the wedding was at 5 p.m., we had time to explore the area a bit. I really like the low country scenery and historical charm. Sitting quietly in the curtained gazebo I was visited by multiple cardinals. They came to visit the feeder, not me, but I can always pretend! How I will always remember Will!

Rest In Peace

In a summer that has been so wet, Sunday was a reprieve. The humidity dropped and the sun came out. It was a day that could have been special ordered by the family of a friend's husband. It was the day they had arranged his celebration of life ceremony set on the shore of Lake Champlain. I was not looking forward to the gathering, even couched as a celebration. This is a family fraught with relationship tensions. It turned out to be a beautiful day and a beautiful ceremony. A Catholic priest gave a brief but meaningful homily and two Air Force members played "Taps" and presented the American flag to my friend. I am not a Christian, but I do know about Christ Consciousness. That priest's word's filled me with such a sense of peace and love. I hope it did the same for the family members and neighbors who attended.
